    Table of Contents

As a writer and editor, I spend many hours interacting with the English language. I’m not your stuffy professor-type… on the contrary - I’m all for creative expression and for breaking the rules, and I’m horrible at finding my own mistakes, which is why my darling husband reads all my blog posts and puts his life on the line to point out errors.

My career started in digital copywriting, which means that I write content for websites. As such, user experience became my focus for each piece I write. User experience to the online world is what books are to nerds. Or what wine is to a writer. It is pivotal for survival. And user experience applies to books. Readers are our users, and they need to have a positive experience when interacting with our books. Sadly, with many books that I have attempted to read, I have missed the user-experience for which I had hoped.

It’s that which has led me to write this short guide. Everyone has at least one book inside of them, and it is my aim to help you to create your best possible work. I’m going to keep it short and sweet, focusing on telling your story or sharing your thought-leadership in the most effective way possible.

For many first time (and some second, third, and fourth time) authors, effective writing is about more than just telling a story or getting a message across to readers in a how to book. Sure, there’s that, but the message they are trying to convey is very important to them, and they need to do so on a budget. I’m not going to tell you how to cut corners, but I am going to show you how to make your editing bill as pocket-book friendly as possible. Isn’t that great news?

Are you ready to get going? I bet you are! Let’s dive right into it.

    To your writing success,

    Part 1: The Writing Process

Chapter 1 – Do You Really Want to Write a Book?

Why do you want to write? That’s the first question you should ask yourself. In speaking to people about their dreams of writing a book, I have heard many answers. Let’s explore them for a moment.

    It is glamorous!

You’d think so, when you follow your favorite authors on social media and you see them playing golf, traveling the world and sipping cocktails with the rich and famous. Now I’m the last one to be a dream-stealer… but it took those authors years of hard work, tears and frustration to achieve that kind of success. James Patterson’s first novel was turned down 31 times before a publisher finally gave it a shot. Are you prepared for the hard work that goes into writing a book? Great!

    I want to get rich!

Don’t we all? But, easy there, tiger. Not everyone’s very first book is a best-seller. And even if your book sells a million copies, you must remember that there are costs attached to producing it. Of course, the costs are different for every book, and could involve the
