Sherry Raby: I grew up in a small borough in Central Pennsylvania, and still remain in a small borough in Central PA. I visited many different areas, and though winters can be harsh, I prefer the seasonal changes to no change. I've been writing since I was 14. The books back then weren't very good, but I've never lost the inner push to keep it up. I published a small children's story in Highlights magazine in the late 1970's. This was my first paid article. It took me almost 35 years of tears and hard knocks to get to where I could be able to publish a book. It was physically started about 10 years ago. Silent Screams by Sherry Raby. I am releasing When the River Rises. It's the stories of my ancestors through grandparent to grandparent to grandparent. I am married and have a total of eight children, and eleven grandchildren. I have migrated back to the hills of Northern Central Pennsylvania and find inspiration almost every day just by looking out my windows.

    Samantha's Choice - Sherry Raby

I would like to thank my husband for his patience and reluctance to bother me when I’m sitting quietly in my computer room.

He sits in his man cave and works on his helicopters and drones.  He keeps a firm distance between us and only disrupts me when he has something important to tell me or when he needs to brag about his successful programming, or wants me to play his favorite computer game with him.

John, you make me smile.  You make me laugh.  You make me want to be a better me.  Without you, I’d be lost.  I’d probably have a lot more writing done, but you make it worth it.

    I love you.

You are my inspiration.  Sei la mia ispirazione.

    Chapter 1

Samantha looked around the cemetery.  She walked slowly to the small grave marker that marked Nonna’s final resting place.  Getting down on her hands and knees, she brushed the grass from the head stone then bowed her head.  Nonna.  I’m lost.  I need you and where are you?  I wish you could talk to me, guide me and let me put my head in your lap as you smooth my hair.  I love you more than you know.  I miss you so much it hurts.

She laid fresh flowers on the grave and stood.  Mom and Dad said they love you.  They’re doing well in Italy.  The girls miss you too.  She kissed her fingers and pressed them to the name.  I’ll see you soon.

Tears sparkled on her long dark lashes.  It’s been a year and a half and I still miss you.  When will it end; this painful feeling of loss?

Samantha started walking back toward her car.  Had it really been only 15 years since she had met Nonna?  She didn’t feel like she should be 21 going on 22.  She felt like the scared little girl who had met the old lady who told her to call her Nonna.  She had taught her Italian, how to cook, and most of all how to be a family.

Without her, Mom and Dad probably wouldn’t be together right now.  Then where would she be?  Phil was the only father she had ever known.

Aunt Janie had her husband and two sons.  Mom and Dad had the four girls, all of which were living in Rome since a year ago.

I wonder what would have happened if I had moved with them instead of staying here to go to school?  But that thought didn’t matter anymore.  Nothing much mattered anymore.  She was cold, lonely and lost.

She looked around and saw her friend still sitting on the bench at the far side of the cemetery.  She waved and started walking toward her.  Well, at least she had Billie.

    Chapter 2

Billie watched Samantha coming toward her.  She huddled closer into her jacket.  She waved to her, knowing she wouldn’t get a response.

Billie was a big woman.  She often joked that the only time she weighed less than 200 pounds was before, when she was a baby.  She often thought of her aunt who had told her, Don’t worry, as soon as your friend comes around, you’ll thin out.  Well that was 13 years ago and she never had thinned out.

She had to laugh.  If Aunt Dorry could see her now, she would be devastated.  At 25 and 250 pounds, no one would be calling her thin, or pretty.  She was plain, never wore make-up, kept her hair pulled back into a tight pony tail, and heard more shouts of dyke, and lesbo than any woman she knew, and she just shrugged it off.  She was happy with who she was.

The only thing she would change, if she could, would be her relationship with Samantha.  She was in love with her.  But for now, she would be her friend, God knew she needed one.  She would be there for [i]her if she needed a hug, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to talk to.  They had been friends since Samantha had been put in her dorm and that was one friendship she wasn’t willing to compromise.  Samantha accepted her unconditionally.  She didn’t care if she was a lesbian, overweight, or plain.  She only cared that she was a good person.  And maybe, being able to speak Italian didn’t hurt.

She continued to watch as Samantha came across the grounds.  She had smoothness about her walk that would have put a model to shame.  Her hair was the color of golden wheat and hung to her waist.  She had it braided at the sides and pulled back from her face.  Her deep blue eyes reminded Billie of a stormy ocean.  She shivered at their intensity.

As Samantha neared, Billie tried to appear aloof.  She didn’t want Samantha to guess her infatuation.  They were both comfortable in their relationship.  She rose from her seat and put her hand out.  Samantha grasped her hand and hugged her.  This is supposed to get easier.  Why isn’t it?  The tears on her abnormally long lashes were crystallizing from the below freezing temperatures.  The cold had put ruddiness into Samantha’s cheeks that would have made Billie look strange, but was beautiful on Sam.

Sam pulled away and smiled.  I guess it’s time to go.  I’ve got work tonight.

Are you working with Aunt Janie?  With Samantha having known Billie for the past four years she had become quite familiar
