Welcome!
Hello!
Thank you for purchasing this eBook and welcome to your new " Travel eGuide: Scotland "! We hope it will help you discover this marvelous country, which abounds in history, traditions, culture, magnificent landscapes and wild nature.
Scotland is a fantastic territory that will content the most demanding travelers by the diversity of its treasures: magnificent castles, dynamic and modern cities where the history left its imprint, small charming villages in which time seems to have been stopped, surprising landscapes from the green meadows to valleys and painted
hills in nuances ranging from brown to yellow via the ochre; beautiful gardens, vibrant bars and restaurants. The list could continue, but you will discover all these things in the following pages ... and later, directly on the spot :-)!
While writing this eGuide I am dreaming about a warm cottage with a fireplace, the tranquillity and typically Scottish calm, the nice black-headed white sheeps, the so charming woolly cows, the pheasants walking freely in the countryside, the fields of narcissuses during the spring, gorgeous landscapes of Highlands. The palette of surprising sceneries colors offers so many reasons for making photos, delicious fish and chips
in a small bar by the sea, magnificent castles, impressive fortresses, ruins of monasteries where you could still hear the echo of past, romantic lakes in a dream frame...
It is difficult for me to stop enumerating all these marvelous things which attracted me and which undoubtedly will force me to return my steps towards Scotland. But in order to get a small idea of what I speak, glance on the dream photos from Scotland!
This e-guide offers a different approach to travel, between travel blog
and classic guide. You can imagine that we do not have a team like the Lonely Planet , so you will not find in this e-book full of addresses of accommodation or restaurants. We share with you our travels, our experiences. We hope that this will help you discover new destinations and will make you want to visit them.
This eGuide
works almost like a website, and does not need to be used along with an Internet connection (unless you want to access the "OpenStreetMap" and other hyperlinks that we provide throughout the book, in real time).
Depending on the capabilities of your eBook reader, you can enjoy zoom features on photos. You can also click on the hypertext links (or hyperlinks) underlined throughout the eGuide. We tried our best to make your reading experience as enjoyable as possible, despite the wide technology gaps between various reading systems.
Be sure that we will propose to you more interactive versions, as the formats and eBook readers should be standardized in the future!
Well, enough chatting. Let's go!
Sincerely,
Cristina & Olivier
Scotland - practical tips
Budget tips:
How arriving in Scotland?
Depending on your country of origin, the tips can be different to have cheaper flight tickets.
Here are some advice which apply, no matter where you are coming from.
Tips:
Buy your tickets in advance (minimum of 3 or even 6 months) to get the best rates so you can choose the dates of your vacation. Look for promotions from different airlines.
Do not buy your tickets at once, but test
the market first. Look for the airline companies which offer your envisaged destinations. For Poland you have two big cities where you can arrive in: Edinburgh here or Glasgow here
Buy your tickets towards one of these cities and then prepare your route or itinerary according to it.
Pay attention because the tickets prices may vary on every hour and without any logic. Consequently, record in a file on your computer the prices you have found for several days before making your decision. This way, you can compare and know immediately when you will have an opportunity not to be missed. You can save more than 250 €/ticket.
If possible, avoid traveling at holiday times (Saint Patrick, Christmas, New Year, etc.) to get the cheapest price for your airline tickets. If you however wish to go during these periods, put your departure a few days before those events.
If you live in Europe and you have enough time to travel, you can go to Scotland by train: buy one InteRail Global pass which allows you to circulate by all the trains of the European Union at prices starting from 280 euro / adult / 10 days and even cheaper for children and young people. For other details and prices see here
Better period to visit:
The end of the spring and of the summer are the most indicated periods of journey: May, June and July the rains are the least frequent, but the temperatures are between 6 and 9°C. For the gardens lovers, it is during the spring that azaleas and rodhodrendrons bloom.
Travelling in Scotland
Tips:
Acar rental is the most suitable way of getting around and discovering the Scottish treasures, especially if your time is limited.
Pay attention: in Scotland you drive on the left side! Another important point: it is necessary to guarantee the car rental with a credit card. Make your reservation on the Internet because the price difference is big, even doubles, if you take the vehicle at the airport without preliminary reservation.
Current speed limits and other details:
Current speed limits are 30 mph (approx.49 km/h) in the cities, 60 mph (96 km/h) out of the cities, 70 mph (112 km/h) on the national roads and on the highways.
There are no tolls on highways, however there are two bridges with a tax: to Forth and to Tay.
Parking: Park either in parking lots in special buildings or on the places with parking meter (you will need coins to obtain a ticket of car park which you should not forget to put at sight in your car).
Traffic rules
- The belt is compulsory in front of and behind ;
- The children under age 14 have to stay behind in the vehicle ;
- headlights are compulsory in case of reduced visibility ;
- In case of breakdown, do not forget to arrange your warning triangle and to put the warning lights ;
You expose yourselves to penalties in case of exceeding the speed limit or if you are in a state of drunkenness.
Accommodation
You have plenty of choices in terms of accommodation. Everything depends on your budget and how many persons travel with you.
Tips:
The B&B and Guesthouse: the famous Bed and Breakfast
offer a room and the breakfast for a rather acceptable price. The breakfast is quite copious, and Scottish. The prices vary according to the zone and the comfort, going from £20 (27€) until £45 / person / night breakfast included. These prices can decrease if you stay several nights.
Hotels: of any category, presents especially in big cities, near golf courses or on the coast, with prices beginning with £20 (30€) / pers. / night in a double room, in the off season. If you look for a luxury hotel, you can choose between the numerous castles transformed into hotels or guest houses - the prices start from £160 (223€ / night / room) with breakfast included.
Youth Hostel: there are a lot in Scotland. It is a cheap solution if you travel within a group because a room has from 4 to 15 beds. The prices start from 11 euros/pers./bed without breakfast. A useful address is http://www.hostelbookers.com.
The camping lots are also numerous. They all propose modern installations and sports equipments. You can find useful information here www.scottishcamping.com where camping lots are classified by region. You can rent a camping lot for a tent or a (lodge) with the same facilities but with a larger surface, a small garden and a parking lot.
The most attractive choice in Scotland is undoubtedly the rent of a cottage. There are hundreds; they constitute a cheap and easy variant, especially for families and groups. There are cottages for 2 to 8-10 persons.
A cottage has generally a dining room, an equipped kitchen (toaster, microwave oven, washing machine, coffee maker, etc.), one or several bedrooms, one or several bathrooms as well. There are also cottages with magnificent gardens, located in dream landscapes, bucolic or isolated villages in the middle of nowhere, by the sea or in the middle of the hills.
Some useful websites to choose or make a reservation: http://www.scotland2000.com/ or http://www.cottageguide.co.uk/ or http://www.scotland-holiday-cottage.com/. All of theses websites feature offers by region and according to the number of people who travel. Cottages are rented weekly or for a long weekend (3 days at least).
Some useful tips:
- Verify what is included in the price and what is not it (electricity, gas, heating, etc.) because the final cost differences can be significant ;
- Get in touch by email or by telephone with the owner to establish details (advance, payment, keys, etc.).
For one week for a family with a child in a cottage with 2 rooms, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, garden and all charges included, you will pay about 250 £ (347 €) on the beginning of the season, which is a very good price.
Everyday life: useful information
Electricity has an intensity of 240V, the grips have three brooches. It is indicated to have a universal adapter with you.
Medical care: if you are citizen of the European Union, it would be a good idea to have the E111 form which allows you to benefit from free medical care. For medicine, it is better to have some basic pills with you, because it is not very probable to obtain them without an order of a physician.
Money and banking system: the local currency is the
