About this ebook

YALSA Quick Pick Award Winner

Express your love for your friends with this sweet, loving book that celebrates the joy of true friendship.

I have a confession to make.
I think I am in friend-love with you.

What’s friend-love? It’s that super-awesome bond you share with someone who makes you happy every time you text each other, or meet up for an epic outing. It’s not love-love. You don’t want to swap saliva; you want to swap favorite books. But it’s just as intense and just as amazing.

And it’s this search for that connection that comic-book artist Yumi Sakugawa captures in I Think I Am in Friend-Love with You. It’s perfect if you've ever fallen in friend-love and want to show that person how much you love them...in a platonic way, of course.

This is purely about a platonic relationship. Which I get. I also long for friendships like this. The continual mantra of but not like a romantic thing is really tiring, however. It's in the title. We get it. But also I think it considers platonic relationships in a weird way. The creator talks about hugs but putting your head on someone's shoulder and holding hands is apparently a weird, inherently romantic thing. A little too simplistic for me.

What a snapshot into the early 2010s. It’s a lovely awkward short comic that reminds me how much friend-love I have in my life.

As an aromantic person, this also can be pretty heavily applied to QPRs (Queer Platonic Relationships) in which it is not romantic or platonic, but falls somewhere off the line or in between (up to the person’s interpretation). Growing up it was so hard to navigate between purely platonic and that kind of “friend-love”. I felt this story deep in my heart, it really spoke to me. Definitely give it a read.

Feels close to my heart, I don’t even know why I’m crying while reading the last few pages. The story is indeed, felt really close to my heart.

I want this (as a physical) book now! I want to feel the paintbrush strokes through the paper. This was such a lovely gem to come upon!

Makes me feel it's a little gay and makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, but it's wholesome neverthless.
