Translated as wind and water, feng shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy that guides your home to becoming in harmony with your environment. The idea comes from the belief that chi, a natural energy, is carried by the wind but collected in the water. Feng shui opens your home to this positive energy and the benefits it brings and then keeps it at your home.
While feng shui can be called an esoteric practice, you do not have to believe its concepts to use it. Feng shui truly has innovative and aesthetic values in helping you design your home. In fact, some interior designers and architects note the scientific benefits of feng shui. For example, a large empty area in the middle of a tall building complex is considered lucky in feng shui but is said to reduce air pressure into the building.
Originally, feng shui was intended to determine the location and orientation of important architecture in China, such as palaces, imperial tombs, government offices and other structures. These important buildings needed all the protection, luck and harmony that it can have and feng shui was used to make sure of it. Heavily influenced by Chinese cosmology, the foundations of feng shui depended on harnessing the energies sourced from heavenly bodies.
