Divorced and apart from his young daughter, Vince just can’t get into the Christmas spirit . He’s supposed to be free, gay, and out. His ex-wife even encourages him to date and be happy – but his heart isn’t in it.
Vince’s younger officemate Tom is working through dark times. He can’t navigate his way out of a paper bag, but his personable manner and generosity is the bright candle that lights the way for both of them. Friends, family, and the greater New York area means nobody needs to be alone – and if they play their cards right, both Tom and Vince just might get a second shot at happiness.

    I - Dread

TOM knocked on Vince’s industrial, beige doorframe, and peeked into one of the coveted private offices. The scratched, polished wood desk was littered with piles of papers and the walls were lined with putty-color filing cabinets, but those cabinets were home to potted plants, one of which was even blooming. Its soft, unobtrusive scent reminded Tom he was still inside and in New Jersey, rather than on a tropical island where that orange-and-pink blooming plant, whatever it was, surely belonged. Even crammed to the gills, though, a private office was a lot better than one of the cubicles in the middle of the open area of the insurance company.

Hey dude… I got those forms for ya. He craned his buzz-cut head into Vince’s small office, expecting his usually upbeat colleague to greet him with a wry grin and a wisecrack.

Oh. Vince lifted his head as though it weighed a ton. Thanks… thank you, Tom.

Not even a smile tugged the curved of Vince’s thin lips. Tom ran his hand over the back of his neck, feeling the starched collar of his white shirt scrape against his palm as he eyed Vince, the clown of the insurance office. Being a new hire, Tom appreciated the friendly humor as Vince showed him the ropes and helped prevent countless, unnecessary screw-ups on his part.

    What’s wrong? Your dog died?

VINCE swiveled his chair toward the window. His younger coworker, the adorable and irritating pup that he was at the moment, had no need to see the lines of grief that lined his face. There was nothing Tom could do about his troubles anyway, not him and not his lawyer, either. His ex-wife had remarried last spring. She seemed happy, and even more importantly, Vince’s eleven-year-old daughter was reasonably satisfied with her new stepfather’s performance. Everything would have worked out well, had they not decided to move back to Ohio so they could live closer to the new stepfather’s family.

Looking back at the situation, Vince thought he should have seen it coming. His daughter still didn’t know he was gay – hell, he had not known until five years ago – and they divorced what, four years back? His tractable and sweet seven-year-old Tatiana had just started playing her little violin back then, and now she sounded like a regular grownup, tugging on Vince’s heartstrings with both her talent and the music she learned to coax out of the old, beat-up instrument.

Vince hadn’t missed a single concert over the years. At least they had stayed around for this long. He felt privileged to watch her grow and change, but he had never been ready to answer her entirely reasonable questions.

But if you still love Mommy and Mommy still loves you, how come you’re divorced?

Because people change, Tatiana. Sometimes, a person can change and learn things about himself, or herself, that he or she never realized would be true. And once you realize those things, how can you go back to what would no longer be true?

She twirled her honey-blonde curl around her finger, sipping her soda as she eyed him across the café table. So what did you find out, Daddy?

Well… I discovered some grown-up things that are hard to explain. The only thing you need to know, honey, is that I will always love you and that your mom and I will always be friends.

THE first part of his promise was easy to keep.
