Introduction
For several years I have been inundated with requests to write about our Ministry in the schools, which is the basic principle of this book, but I also decided to write about my all-consuming passion for children’s Ministry in the local Church, which I am firmly convinced should be an integral part of every Church in the United States and in the Churches of every other civilized country as well!
When I originally decided to write this book, Children’s Ministry in the local Church is not what I had in mind, however, since I am firmly convinced that the key to Church growth is reaching the younger generation, it seems logical to include some historical facts which will serve to explain some of the reasons why I am adamant about my philosophy.
I am certain that many who read this book will disagree with my dogmatic approach to reaching the lost, but it will not influence my writing in any measure! At eighty-one years old, I have finally learned that everyone does not see things through my eyes!
Be that as it may, if I am able to persuade even one Pastor who is interested in growing their congregation to rise up and reach out to their community through children, then my efforts will not be wasted!
One of the excuses I given from time to time is this one which has worn a little thin with me; I don’t feel an anointing to knock on doors or do outreach programs! That sounds very spiritual, but in my opinion, it is simply a cop-out! Jesus clearly told the Disciples what the primary purpose for sending the Holy Ghost was, To be a witness!
1. To Jerusalem, That’s home,
2. To Judea, That’s your next door neighbor
3. To Samaria; That’s to folks that you don’t even like!
4. To the uttermost parts of the earth; that is people that you have never met!
Anointing? Before you decide to witness?
Do you have the HOLY GHOST?
Chapter One
What Is Great
About A Child?
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them
(Isaiah 11:6;KJV).
The disciples came unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven
(Matthew 18:1-4;KJV). The primary purpose behind writing this, my 49th book, is actually very simple, it is basically for the purpose of challenging those in the Church world who may actually read this book, to examine themselves and their belief systems! I am convinced that an enormous share of the Christian Churches of today and especially Full Gospel Churches, need an earth shaking wake-up call to compel them to actually do something to build the swiftly declining Church influence in the world!
Perhaps it is time to ask ourselves, exactly what is my priorities? Far too many Churches have the idea which was the premise of a movie that aired in the early nineties, called;
The Field of Dreams!
If you build it, they will come!
Sounds good, but in Church work? That is a lie of the devil! If it is not, then Jesus Himself was talking non-sense as He was ascending into the Heavens!
What is the primary purpose for the entrance of the Holy Spirit into the world when Jesus finished the work on earth which He was ordained from the foundation of the world to do?
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth
(Acts 1:8;KJV).
Although there are many aspects to Church work, there is none as important to utilize as activating the power to witness! Building a great Church is hard work which is often done by those who are totally unappreciated.
Unfortunately, the largest percentage of all the congregations across America are mostly made up of those whose dedication to Church begins and ends with an occasional Sunday morning service!
As Christians as well as ministers of the Gospel, our focus must change if we plan to do anything of any significance for the Kingdom of God!
I do not mean to be offensive to anyone, but the harsh truth is an undeniable fact, the greater percentage of Pastors themselves actually have little or no burden to speak of for the sea of lost humanity that is surrounding all of us. Their main focus is simply on maintaining the status quo.
If that statement offends you, there is a strong possibility that you are guilty!
According to the Pew Research Organization, the average size of a traditional Church in America is about 75-80 people including children. That is actually down from the statistic of ten years ago when the average was 90-100!
We all hear about the great mega-Churches, which crowd the airwaves, but most Churches in America are small congregations with one individual serving as Pastor and a very small percentage of them will employ an assistant Pastor.
These smaller Churches seem to be captivated by an in-grown relationships and a family atmosphere, which may be comforting, but unfortunately, it leaves no place for the occasional outsider who may wander in from time to time.
The reason I use the term WANDER IN! Is because generally, the members are guilty of failing to ever invite anyone else to Church!
Dr. Paul Paino, who was one of the greatest Church builders who ever lived, has now gone on to his reward, but I shall never forget a casual conversation we had as we walked together around his one-hundred acre camp grounds in Angola, Indiana.
We had just returned from a convention in Dayton, Ohio, where the Pastor of a Church I had been to a few weeks earlier had been one of the speakers. Dr. Paino was very complimentary about the sermon he had preached and asked me if we had ever been to his Church?
When I told him that not long ago, we had held a three week revival there, he
