Introduction
If you have ever attended a business networking group, you'll have a pretty good idea of how LinkedIn works. LinkedIn is simply an online networking group where you can meet and connect with professionals and other business owners; build relationships with them that in time, will hopefully lead to business.
In many ways, being a LinkedIn member is a lot easier than being in a traditional business' networking group. Since it is online, you can connect with anyone, anywhere. You don't need to get up at 5 a.m. to attend a breakfast meeting or to rush off after work to make the evening one. There is also no need to stand-up and deliver a one-minute elevator speech, no need to walk up to people and introduce yourself, no pressure to bring along a guest every week. You can do pretty much everything on your own time, in your own way. And finally, you don't need to pay annual membership fees as well as weekly fees.
This means that if you are not comfortable speaking in front of an audience you can still meet new contacts without going through the stress of public speaking. You can join in as many groups as you want, jump into a conversation without being rude, or simply listen in without feeling like a wallflower.
Of course, there is a flipside to this. Since there is no necessity for you to actively chat to people, you can end up spending your time on it without any positive result. And since it's online, you also have more competition. If you don't have an engaging profile or don't have time to start a conversation, you'll be buried under millions of competitors.

What is LinkedIn?
A huge number of LinkedIn features are business and marketing biased. They make the process of meeting, connecting and converting business relatively simple.
As a LinkedIn member, you can connect with limitless numbers of people, and once you are connected to someone, there is an open channel for an ongoing conversation between you. Every time one of you updates your status or makes any account changes, it appears in the other's newsfeed (this can have some unwanted repercussions, which we will discuss later).
You can send private messages to each other. You can recommend, introduce and share information. However, be careful not to spam your connections. They can easily remove you from their network.
There are also an extensive number of industry and subject-specific groups that you can join and interact with... or perhaps simply watch, listen and learn.
However, with the rising number of members, the LinkedIn newsfeed is getting flooded with huge numbers of status updates and general network activity,
