    We all want to feel clean and beautiful, and we can spend vast amounts of time and money to make ourselves as beautiful as possible, whether it’s for ourselves or for other people. Of course, the goal posts of what IS beautiful keep moving, so that doesn’t help us, but we keep trying anyway. There’s a big old beauty industry out there that makes sure of that! That’s not just the manufacturers, who spend millions of pounds on advertising campaigns that tell us how we shouldn’t be satisfied with how we look, the condition of our hair etc. It’s also the media, who produce images of impossibly beautiful young women – impossible because these women have blemishes, cellulite, dry skin patches, whatever, just like the rest of us, but the technology of Photoshop allows all them to magically disappear. Even social media is responsible for making us dissatisfied with who we are. People don’t usually post images on their Facebook pages when they have spots or no makeup – so we only see the best of everyone.

    Trying to achieve these standards involves us using lots of products: on our hair, our faces and our bodies. There’s nothing wrong with that, and this isn’t a book that’s going to tell you to stop shaving your armpits and go cosmetics-free, although obviously, you can if you like – your choice! But there might be something wrong with the products we’re using. In fact, I’ll amend that to say that if you’re using conventional products manufactured by the big companies there IS something wrong with those products – they might be harming
