Many sales people are ‘ASK’ resistant – they are afraid to ask for the sale. And, as a result, they fail to meet or exceed their full potential in the sales arena.
I remember spending the day with 200 plus sales people in Wisconsin a few years back. I worked with half of them in the morning, their sales managers at lunch, and the remainder following lunch. This was part of helping this leading statewide furniture retailer launch their version of our on-line Secret Selling Tip sales success program.
As a part of my presentation I asked them if anyone wanted to know a secret that would ‘guarantee’ they would generate two to three times more sales in the coming year. Hands went up all over the room. I asked them to get their pens ready to write down this amazing secret and I could see them anxiously awaiting my next words.
I paused dramatically and said, Simply ask for the order (sale) at least twice in every sales conversation.
I watched with amazement as faces showed their disappointment. They had been expecting some life changing answer. Actually, I had given it to them, but many of them did not hear it. I went on to say, Many of you do not even ask for the order once and your results show it.
Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.

I visited an authentic Indian store while speaking in Mumbai, India. After touring this amazing store we were brought into a seating area and served tea. A very nice man started bringing out trays of jewellery: diamonds, emeralds, etc. He asked if I liked them and then proceeded to bring out more trays. Wow!
I made the attempt to let him know I wasn’t going to buy any. His response was to shrug and say, But sir, it is my duty to show you!
Twice! Then I made the mistake of asking if he had any garnets. Why not look?
