    Some College - Ashley Bradley

    Some College

    Ashley Bradley

Julianne was excited to go to college. But not for the right reasons, she felt. She primarily was excited to go to 1. get away from her loud ass family, and 2. the food. Julianne had heard college food was pretty good. This was from her year older cousin, Marsha, who'd e-mail Julianne about her college experience, hyping her up.

Marsha was in one of those black sororities. AKAs or one of them shits. She always wore these really ugly, bright ass diner mint colors, and she wasn't even proper in the sorority yet. She was in the bottom stages, before they accept you, where you have to clean period stains out of the deltas' underwear and give their boyfriends blowjobs when they're cramming for exams. Julianne tried to ignore the parts of Marsha's e-mails where she discussed her rush adventures or whatever disturbing mess she had going on, and instead chose to focus on when Marsha detailed the different things she was eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What she was getting from the caf.

Marsha described all sorts of delicacies, like hoagie subs, panini omelettes, hot dog sushi (?), french fries, Taco Salad Wednesday, Tartar Sauce Tuesday, rye bread cannoli, Fruit Loops at lunch, buckets of whole boiled eggs, paella, a protein muscle shake bar, coleslaw, lima beans, and more. At first, Marsha would just casually detail what she had eaten for lunch, or a snack, but Julianne got so excited over those little tidbits, that she requested Marsha dedicate a whole section in her weekly e-mails to Julianne, just detailing the different food she was getting. Marsha obliged, and sometimes even included food she'd get from the two food trucks that sat outside campus, and the Vietnamese-Barbecue fusion restaurant down the block from school, which Julianne had to request she stop doing because it was making her sick. But the other shit, the other food Marsha detailed, got Julianne very, very excited about attending college. Or at least Marsha's. She wanted some hot dog sushi, so she applied to Marsha's school, Anne Frank University.

Marsha hung herself in her dorm room like two days after Julianne submitted her application. Julianne didn't understand how someone with such easy access to hoagie subs and rye bread cannoli could not have everything to live for. But to say the least, this news made Julianne quite apprehensive. But not necessarily about college, at the time. Mostly she was nervous she'd be attending Anne Frank University alone, when she had gotten it all fantasized in her head, that she'd be hanging
