Diy Protein Bars - Maudie Webb
Introduction
Protein bars are generally very easy to make. The other great thing about protein bars is that they are so inexpensive to make. You won’t have to spend your hard earned money on them anymore at the store. You can make them yourself at a fraction of the price. You only need four main components: oatmeal, nut butter, a liquid base for mixing such as almond milk, and protein powder. That’s it - you incorporate almost all four ingredients together, allow it to cool, and then cut it into bars. Generally, there are other ingredients that are used in the protein bar to give it more flavor or other added benefits. They generally taste better and, as mentioned earlier, are much less expensive than purchasing protein bars from a store.
Protein bars are great for breakfast, a snack between the meals, or an on the go meal replacement. They are perfect for your pre-workout regimen and also great for post-work munchies. They can also help you gain weight or muscle if you need to do that. Protein bars are good for weight loss, too. The protein can help you feel fuller for a longer period of time.
One thing to keep in mind as you read this book is to thoroughly cool your protein bars after you mix them. You might want to use your refrigerator for that instead of leaving them out on the counter. You can use whatever type of healthy fat (such as coconut oil) or milk that you want in these recipes. You can find alternatives to cow’s milk, such as soy or almond, in two different areas of the grocery store. They are found both in the refrigerated section and often you can find shelf stable versions on the baking aisle. You will be able to locate the good fats on the baking aisle.
We chose peanut butter as the base nut butter for many of these recipes. You can choose your own nut butter. Almond butter might make for some especially tasty protein bars. We chose peanut butter because it is very inexpensive. You can use seed butters if you have a nut allergy. If, for some reason, you do not have access to peanut, nut, or seed butter, you can make your own – we’ve provided the instructions to do that here in this book. If you’re ready to make your own protein bars, let’s get started. Enjoy...
Chapter 1: Protein Bar 101: What You Need to Know
In this chapter, we will discuss the basic things that you need to know about making protein bars. Although I touched on it a little bit in the Introduction, this chapter provides more detail and will explain why you might want to choose specific ingredients for your protein bars. One of the great things about making protein bars is that you can make them to match your personal needs. Of course, you will need some basic kitchen equipment such as measuring bowls, measuring cups, and things you can use to store your protein bars. Next, you’ll learn more about the basic ingredients that make up protein bars:
Grains
Whole grains are better for you than any other kind of grain. Medical research from the Mayo Clinic shows that a diet with whole grains can lower the risk of heart problems like heart disease. Whole grains are considered unrefined. This means that they still have the bran and the germ. They are also a complex carbohydrate. So, your body will convert it into a longer lasting type of energy than if you decided to eat a simple carbohydrate (an example of a simple carbohydrate is table sugar). The grain component is very important. Here are some grains that you may want to consider for your protein bars:
