About this ebook

Get swept away on an adventure and see history coming to life before your eyes with the Children of Snotingas. If you love Children’s action and adventure stories for ages seven and up, you’ll love C.S. Woolley’s thrilling Anglo-Saxon stories.

Life in Anglo-Saxon England is far from fair, but times are changing in Snotingas. As King Penda breaks away from Nordhymbria, six young boys see a chance to change their lives for the better. Wayland, Halsey and Channing are all slaves. Ransom, Seward and Tostig are all from the ceorl class of servants. Each boy dreams of being a warrior and now they finally have a chance.

War with Nordhymbria means that not only can the lives of slaves and servants change, but the lives of the children of kings and thanes. Kipp, Morven and Nyle are all warriors and sons of some of the most powerful families in Nordhymbria, but none of that means anything now that they are prisoners of Snot. However, the three boys have no plans to sit by and wait for the war to end. Instead, they are determined to cause as many problems as they can for their captors, but the sons of Nordhymbria still have to contend with the daughters of Snotingas.

Will the sons of Nordhymbria escape and return to their homes? Will Wayland, Halsey, Channing, Ransom, Seward and Tostig achieve their dreams of becoming warriors?

Step back in time to the age of King Penda, when the kingdom of Mercia was born.

Thanks for taking the time to read WYRD, it’s another book I didn’t have plans to write and just seemed to come together on its own. The research side of this was particularly interesting as it was not only researching the area I now live in, but also the history of how my nation came to be.

    Prologue

Snot was a Thane of Mercna who served King Penda. He was a war leader that his people liked and was trusted by the king. When King Penda had told the king of Nordanhymbria that his people were not going to be part of their kingdom, Snot had been with him.

King Penda formed the kingdom of Mercna and the war leaders were ready to fight any warriors from any of the other kingdoms that lay around them. Eadwine, the King of Deira and Bernicia, had been in East Engle in exile, protected by King Raedwald, until they had faced King Æthelfrith in battle by the River Idle in 616. Raedwald had defeated Æthelfrith, Eadwine had married Cwenbury, Raedwald’s daughter, and been made king.

The war bands of Eadwine and Raedwald were strong and Eadwine had spent the last ten years seizing control of the countries of Eoforwic, Rheged, Dunoting, Elmet and Pecsæte, creating the nation of Nordanhymbria. Then he had turned his eyes on the lands of Nord Engle, Mercna and the lands of Cair Lerion that lay between Nordanhymbria and East Engle.

But Raedwald had died and though Eadwine was strong, the people of Cair Lerion had no intention of becoming part of Eadwine’s kingdom. Penda had made a pact with King Cynegils and King Cwichelm, the kings of Middl Engle and Suth Engle to strengthen his own war band against the might of Eadwine.

Ceorl had been king before Penda, but he had been a weak king. He was scared of Eadwine and had been happy for Nord Engle to serve Nordanhymbria, but the people were not. Penda went to Snot for help. Penda wanted to seize the throne from his cousin and named Snot thane of Snotingham when Penda had become king. The lands of Snotingham lay along the border of Nordanhymbria. Penda needed someone who he could trust to keep the men of
