Introduction — Why Love-Based Copy?
When I wrote my first copywriting book, "Love-Based Copywriting Method: The Foundation for Writing Copy That Attracts,
Inspires and Invites" (which you can check out on Amazon or LoveBasedCopyBooks.com), I wanted the book to be about the philosophy of love-based copy, rather than the nuts and bolts of writing copy.
(Copywriting is writing promotional materials for businesses. Nothing to do with putting a copyright on something or protecting your intellectual property. And direct response copywriting (or direct response copy), which is what both this book and my first copywriting book is all about, is about crafting promotional materials that inspire people to take action — click on a link, give you their name and email address, or buy a product from one of those long sales letters where you’re scrolling down forever looking for the price.)
The reason I wrote the first Love-Based Copywriting
book is because over the years, I’ve met countless entrepreneurs who were between a rock and a hard place. They wanted the benefits of direct response copy in their business: they wanted to leverage their time, energy and money, while marketing one-to-many and automating their sales and marketing to free up their time and allow them to reach more people than they could without it…
But they hated how it made them feel.
Inauthentic. Hype-y. Sales-y. Slime-y. Like a used car salesman.
So what were they to do? Pull up their big girl (or big boy) panties and use it even though they secretly hated it? Or not use it, and forgo all those fabulous benefits direct response copy brings to their business?
Well, now there’s a third choice: use love-based copy instead.
You see, whether love-based or fear-based, both are a part of direct response copy, because direct response copy works by tapping into emotions. And you need to tap into emotions because buying (or really taking any type of action) is an emotional process — so without the emotions, people won’t move forward.
But you have a choice. You can choose to sell via fear-based emotions (fear, shame, guilt, worry) or you can choose to sell via love-based emotions (hope — which is not to be confused with false hope — love, pleasure, compassion, connection).
Traditionally, most direct response copy tapped into fear — hence it feeling so bad. But tapping into fear in order to create direct response copy that still sells for you is not required. You CAN choose to sell - and market - with love.
And that’s what my first book was about — explaining and delving into the love-based copy philosophy.
And it got a HUGE response — bigger than I expected. I had people emailing and messaging me how that book changed their life. I had people making my book a required resource for their students.
I knew what I was teaching was super-important and needed, but still, I was unprepared for the passionate response I received.
And that’s when I knew I had to write this book.
Now, to be completely accurate, I had already decided I needed to write a more nuts and bolts
copywriting book, and that was going to be my second book. But with the response from the first book, I realized I needed to combine taking the love-based copy approach deeper, while teaching more of the foundational copywriting pieces.
And that’s what I’ve aspired to do with this book.
So, this book is for you if:
