- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In the short novel The Saddest Summer of Samuel S (which Donleavy also wrote as a play), Samuel is stalked by poverty (not relieved by attempting to work) and loneliness. Surviving on handouts, he attempts to maintain his principles when it comes to women, who seem to want him as a short-term amusement or male concubine.Meet My Maker the Mad Molecule is a series of short stories and pieces in which a young man is cast aside by his wealthy father, another young man's wife dies on a transatlantic voyage, others are embarrassed, hurt, discarded; sometimes they return the favor. The are also a couple of pieces describing Wimbledon and paddling races at Putney.
