Prologue
It is my intention to keep these Very Short Stories
as brief as possible so as not to bore the reader, rewarding him or her with a surprise and a twist in each one. All the events described are fiction as they have grown exclusively out of my phantasy. I was privileged to live in different continents and countries enabling me to refer to a variety of mentalities realizing that the sense of humour prevailing in each story is common to all sectors of human nature. The reader will enjoy the surprising narratives, most of them with a twist at the end.
Enjoy and smile.
Brazil
The atmosphere was heavy, hot and moist, exotic and full of expectations. Brazil at its fullest. The magic of all rainbow colours and the sounds of invisible creatures hidden in the immensity of a tropical forest would give an intruder a feeling of danger as well as of being part of an all embracing environment of gigantic proportions. Along the edge of this wonder of nature a riverbank contrasted in colour and composition with the massive green jungle, which it seemed to limit to give way to a wide and rather muddy river. On the opposite side, beyond the river bank an opening into a rather less dense forest seemed to lead into some primitive yet organized habitat with little huts, some of them sending fine lines of smoke beyond the height of the trees. To complete the picture, there were signs of human activity in what appeared to be a small jungle village. This village seemed to be the destination or at least a resting area on the journey of a group of riders leading a large herd of cattle along the other side of the river, yet there was no sign of any bridge which might allow them a safe crossing. The river was well known as infested by piranhas, although these would only attack if there was an open wound or blood on man or beast.
The need for solutions make people inventive and so these riders decided to sacrifice one animal by making a cut on its skin before sending it into the river. The effect was dramatic and horrific. The animal had not even ventured a few metres into the river when it was attacked by hundreds of piranhas allowing the riders and the rest of the herd to cross the river safely further on while the sacrificial cow was disappearing in an atrocious whirlpool of blood and water. Nature may be cruel but effective.
While riders and herd were crossing the river and the unfortunate animal was being sacrificed, the natural peace was pierced by the most unusual vibrations of a helicopter with its video recording crew from a different world. The conversation by the two crew-members confirmed the object of their mission to record not so much the crossing of a herd but the unnatural death of an unfortunate animal. The commission had emanated from the middleman of a corporation; objective unknown. The pay was very good, so no questions were asked. Apparently organized crime seemed to be involved and interested in the disappearance of a live creature without leaving any trail to follow up.
The potential for crime could make one shudder; was it the mafia or even a political organization? Guessing left the door open for all kind of conjectures, but whatever the motivation behind the interest of such a cruel episode was frightening.
Several days later, on the tenth floor of an office building in Rio de Janeiro a number of serious looking individuals met to discuss the viability of a very important action plan. A lot depended on their decision for the future of their organization. Serious money was their motivation apart from the risk and responsibility carried by each one of them. The man in charge looked sombre and warned that they all had to take their own decision, aware of the consequences of an eventual failure. The meeting lasted for several hours before breaking up in a much more relaxed mood. Apparently a decision so important for their organization and for each one of them had been reached and orders for implementation could now be issued and passed on for execution
The final result of all their efforts was contained in a huge billboard showing that whatever piranhas were capable of doing had no comparison with what
