About this ebook

The eclipse was coming.

Xun roamed her mother's place halls, unable to sleep. Restless energy filled her; Dorji Kita's energy.

She would have called it boredom with being home if it weren't for visiting deities, prophecies of destruction...

...and Xun losing her humanity inch by inch.

Change was coming for Xun and this time she wasn't sure that it could be fought.

    Afterword

    Quiet Hour of the Night

Xun sighed as she walked slowly through the hallways. Strange how the sprawling mansion Mama had built to house her hoard of children, husbands and relatives seemed so small now. But it was small compared to the world. After traveling across the world and to the Heavens themselves, Xun's childhood home was constricting.

Beautiful. Rich wood paneling gleamed in the moonlight that streamed through many open windows. The smell of pine and wildflowers filled the hallway. Even this late at night, Xun could smell the grass that had been clipped early in the evening. Frogs sounded constantly to lure mates into the many ponds scattered around the mansion.

Her bare feet, golden as they'd been when she was born, sank into the new cobalt blue and gold carpets Mama had commissioned when too many grandkids running up and down the hallways had destroyed the previous green and orange ones. Mama had laughed when Xun asked about it yesterday, wrinkling her nose and shrugging away any of Xun's concerns about money spent and inevitable destruction by those same hoards of kids.

She stopped at the end of the hallway. Left to her rooms, empty and quiet, or right to the library?

Her bed was waiting. Who knew the next time Xun would have so much quiet time for just resting and gardening? She should sleep. But her feet wouldn't stay still. That's why she was wandering the hallways in the middle of the night anyway. When she looked at the library, a light gleamed under the heavily carved doorway.

    Library it was.

At least she wasn't the only one awake tonight. Xun just wished that she knew what had her so restless. Normally she dropped off to sleep without any problems. Granted, it had gotten more difficult since she killed Dorji Kita. The stain of his godly blood had changed her in more ways that just dyeing the upper half of her head blood-red.

She was stronger, less vulnerable to cold and heat. Faster by a little bit. Still short, still round, still painfully practical and straightforward to a fault but Xun could feel the power of Dorji Kita soaking into her day by day.

Kind of made her wonder when she'd wake up and realize that she didn't need to eat or drink or breathe anymore.

The library was mostly empty. Just Keanu sitting at the window, holding a tiny frog in the palm of his hand. The frog croaked earnestly, staring up at Keanu's gently glowing face with a sort of attention that Xun found funny. Creepy but also funny.

Adding frogs to your minions? Xun asked as she shut the door behind her.

Oh no, Keanu said with one of his blinding grins at her. Not at all.

The room lightened so much that it looked like dawn had come early. The little frog's eyes shut to mere slits but it didn't stop croaking at him. Didn't even budge when Xun gently poked its side.

Gonna be the demigod of frogs if you keep this up, Xun teased and then laughed when Keanu pouted at her. I know, I know. There are already some lovely gods of the frogs.

Yes, and she's sitting right here, Keanu said, holding the little frog up. No need for me to do anything but gossip.

Xun blinked and then looked more closely at the little frog. She was a strange scarlet color with brilliant yellow stripes on her flanks. Not the normal sort of frog they got in the gardens around the mansion. Hell, for all Xun knew there were no other frogs like her in the whole wide world.

Though she doubted it. Gods had followers and those followers tended to take on the look and feel of their deity over time whether they wanted to or not. The little frog looked up
