INTRODUCTION
Welcome to COLLECTORS’ COINS IRELAND
It was a long time coming, but here it is! The first new price-guide on Irish coins for many years. This book is based on the old editions by the late R. J. Maries. It has been updated by myself with the help of a lot of price data supplied by Mick Taylor. Coins prior to 1660 are not covered here, but I have included a brief history of Irish coinage up to 1660, printed on the following pages. I’d like to thank Del Parker of Texas, USA (www.irishcoins.com) for allowing me to use a lot of very nice images of some very hard to come by coins. I’ve also used a number of images reproduced from the 1899 ’Handbook of the Coins of Great Britain and Ireland’ by H. A. Grueber, which also included a lot of useful information.
It was quite difficult to price some of the earlier coins in this book as the market for Irish coins isn’t as large as, for example, British coins. And with less people collecting them, there are less sales and less data. Some of the very rare Irish coins don’t get offered very often and that also makes them hard to price. There is also a
