Chapter 1
The human brain
Understanding the different functions of the human brain is a big part in handling the power struggle between the emotional section and the logical part of your own mind. Here you will gain some foundational knowledge of the various parts of the brain, as well as how the main operation works, before we get to the various thoughts and behaviors we experience and have to deal with on a daily basis. Having a strong understanding of how the human thinking part of the brain operates will give you a better understanding of the rest of the topics we will discuss in this book and give you better clarity through your reading. I will try not to bore you too bad in this section, but it will be enlightening. The human brain appears to be severely complex, but once you understand how it operates, it is simpler than you think. The difference between two major sections of the human brain are the logical part of the brain, which is located in the frontal lobe (Front of the brain), as well as the emotional state of the mind (limbic system,) which is mainly deep in the middle part of the brain, and is placed there to be a backing force to the logical part of the brain and not a leading force to choices and actions. When the emotional part of the brain is a backing force to logical and truthful actions, the pair makes a very strong and powerful force in speaking truth and doing the right thing. Since the emotional part of the brain helps people be stronger, it also thinks it is good enough to be a leading force in people’s lives. When this happens the mind becomes weak as well as the person who gives into it. The true strength it has and provides is due to backing truth and facts which can only be determined by the frontal lobe. A good example of this is when you have been trained in how to do something you already know what needs to be done and might have a little anxiety about not messing it up, because that anxiety helps keep you focused. When you have emotional thoughts lead you because you are not trained in how to do something you become paralyzed by fear when it comes time to do it. So now let’s break some of these sections of the brain down for a better understanding.
The limbic System
The Limbic system is a complex set of structures that lies on both sides of the thalamus, just under the cerebrum. It includes the hypothalamus, the hippocampus and the amygdala, and is to be primarily responsible for our emotional life. It also has a lot to do with the formation of memories. All the areas of the limbic system interconnect intensively but are not solely responsible for any certain kind of emotional state. Some areas do at times contribute more than others to an emotional thought or action. While the structures in this highly developed part of the brain interconnect, research has shown that the amygdala, a small almond-shaped structure in the Limbic system and the hippocampus which also looks like a tiny seahorse in shape. These two areas appear to be the main areas involved with emotions. The amygdala connects with the hippocampus as well as the medial dorsal nucleus of the thalamus. These connections enable it to play an important role in the mediation and control of major activities such as friendship, love, affection and as well as expression of mood.
Amygdala
The Amygdala is an almond-shaped set of neurons located deep within the brain's medial temporal lobe. It plays a key role in processing emotions and is linked to both fear and pleasure in humans and other animals. The amygdala is also correlated with aggressive behavior over a number of species and also conditions such as anxiety, autism, PTSD, depression, love, fear, anger and sexual desire. Shippensburg University states that in animal studies, stimulation or removal of the amygdala alters the emotional response: electrical activation causes aggression, while surgical removal results in indifferent emotional reactions. Therefore, damage to the amygdala can result in abnormal emotional responses, and overstimulation causes excessive reactions. Also phobias are thought to be associated with abnormal functioning of the amygdala.
Hippocampus
The hippocampus is another part of the limbic system that sends information to the amygdala. One of the memory processing centers of the brain, the hippocampus interacts with the amygdala when a person has memories with emotional ties. It is said by health researchers that the connection between the hippocampus and amygdala is the origin of strong emotions triggered by particular memories and is extremely possible to be the root of emotional led thinking.
Hypothalamus
The hypothalamus, also a part of the limbic system, feeds information into the amygdala. The hypothalamus is said to be the regulator of emotion, in the sense of controlling levels of sexual desire, pleasure, aggression and anger. The hypothalamus is also a median part and has been identified as a major contributor to the production of loud, uncontrollable laughter. The neurons in your hippocampus also play a role in emotions and the brainstem is the region responsible for the emotional reactions
. Also in the brainstem it is used as alerting mechanisms, vital for survival, but in the maintenance of the sleep-awake cycle.
Cingulate Gyrus
The cingulate gyrus acts as a pathway between the thalamus and the hippocampus and plays a role in remembering emotional charged events. This section of the Limbic system focuses mainly on situations currently happening and alerting the rest of the brain that it is emotionally significant.
Ventral Tegmental Area
The ventral tegmental area is also involved in emotions and love, particularly in how a person perceives pleasure. Dopamine pathways are located in the ventral tegmental area: dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in mood and increased levels elevate the person's level of pleasure.
Prefrontal Cortex
The prefrontal cortex (frontal lobe), located near the front of the head, is involved in decision making in response to information received as well as emotions. This part of the brain should be the leading force in your life because it processes information received and determines what is fact as well as truth. When you make a decision using the Frontal Lobe, along with the emotional backing from the limbic system your actions become more powerful. The prefrontal cortex also regulates anxiety.
Mental disorders
If there are no physical elements responsible for mental disorders i.e. brain damage, fatigue, and severe pain. There is no excuse for you to not be in control of your own self, but even if you are suffering from physical ailments you are still able to acknowledge and control yourself enough to prevent yourself from spiraling completely out of control. They say that mental disorders are genetic but the truth is they are not passed down by genes they are actually learned behavior and what I mean by that is when you have out-of-control parents (Emotionally led) and now raising a child they are actually teaching the child what they know and that’s how to be emotionally led and out of control. So the parents end up teaching the child to live their life with the limbic system as the decision maker in their life instead of the prefrontal cortex which sends them into a life of drama and mayhem. This is also compounded due to the parent’s mental abuse for their own empowerment and sense of control at the child’s expense. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is published by the American Psychiatric Association, which was created because the Psychiatric Association could not figure out why mental disorders existed but had to put names to different emotional led behavior in order to get a pharmaceutical drug attached to it, which only compounds the problem.
Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder which involves the breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation. Schizophrenia is a prime example of how emotions take control of a person and be a leading force in their life to the extreme it can go either way of being more prominent. Fear and anxiety are the main leading emotions in a person with Schizophrenia and the problem is compounded by being prescribed mental suppressing drugs which causes more side effects and compounds the problem
Victim syndrome
We have all heard this saying and what it pretty much is his attention is attention and when people have nothing to offer i.e. knowledge the easy way out is better because is taking his sympathy from others by playing victim or they can get sympathy from others by making
