Love Conquers All
Chapter 1
Since Danielle Williams told Andrew Johnson that her child was also his child, things had been a little awkward. He had gone to Japan for a week, she had continued to work for him in a strange professionalism.
This went on for almost a month, moving around each other in a professional choreographed dance. That is until one night they were both working late, she tended to stay as late as he did, in case he needed her something. Andrew usually didn't need her for anything past five pm, but that night he called her into his office.
His office was wide and spacious, lights overhead flooding light in, since the floor-to-ceiling windows that created the wall to her left showed only darkness. The sun was setting earlier than she realized. She sat in front of his giant desk. He was typing something on the desktop, then he stopped and turned to her.
His wonderful blue eyes watched her. Danielle used to have the ability to know exactly what he was thinking just by looking into those eyes. However, five years apart had made her lose that ability.
You don't have to stay as long as I do,
he said again, by means of starting the conversation. It was something he had said to her many times, but she always insisted. She liked to be there.
It's okay,
she said, I really don't mind.
I want to meet her,
Andrew said.
You're not angry.
The entire month, she could have just asked if he was angry, and she didn't think of doing that until this very minute." Andrew shook his head.
I understand why you didn't tell me,
Andrew said. It was a forgivable offence, but what does Matthew think?
Matthew was the man she had been married to and divorced a few months ago. Aside from the child support payments, Matthew lived in a different state and she never really heard from him.
I told him she wasn't his a few months before we finalized the divorce,
Danielle said. It had been easier to pretend that Emily was his daughter. It was easier to live in a state of denial. Andrew nodded.
Look, I want you to go home right now,
he said, but I also want to take the three of you out. To dinner?
She's five. Her attention span is about eight seconds. She can't really do sit down dinners,
Danielle said.
Then the park?
Andrew said, this weekend? Saturday?
She stared at him. For as long as she had been working with him, he had worked Saturdays. Having a young daughter was the only reason why she got Saturdays off.
Can you spare that?
Danielle asked.
I'll make it work,
Andrew said, Dani, I want to be a part of her life.
Danielle couldn't begrudge her that. She wanted him to be part of Emily's life. She considered it, then nodded.
Fine,
she said, three in the afternoon on Saturday. And, until I say so, you're just a friend of mine, okay?
Emily had gone through so much, with her dad moving away. Danielle was trying to keep they rest of her daughter's life stable. Andrew smiled. There had been a time when she had wanted that smile, yearned for that smile, and she wasn't surprised to find out that she still needed that smile, I want you to be a part of her life too, but we have to see how she feels about it.
Danielle knew that Emily would adore anyone. Emily was five. The only people she didn't like were her teacher and the cashier at the grocery store.
I know,
Andrew said. He was so different from their university years. He had grown into someone so business savvy and mature that she almost didn't recognize him. She knew that she had changed too, and that he was having the same feelings of recognizing her, but not knowing her. Danielle knew that she had grown and changed after he had left for London, but she wasn't exactly sure it was a good change.
Is there anything else I can do for you?
she asked sweetly.
Yes,
Andrew said, go home.
***
Danielle's younger sister Daria had moved in after Danielle had gotten divorced. Even though Danielle was okay now, Daria was still there. Danielle didn't mind having her sister around, and it was nice to have some company that wasn't her daughter.
Daria was sitting on the couch, her legs crossed underneath her. Emily was in her room, drawing.
She's been really good all day,
Daria said, she still hates school.
Danielle sat next to her younger sister. Despite the three years between them, Danielle and Daria were almost identical, dark skin, wide dark eyes and the same smile. However, Daria was the more reckless of the two. She had calmed down a lot, since moving in with Danielle, but there was still a little glimmer of rebellion in her personality.
He wants to meet her,
Danielle said.
I'm confused,
Daria said, are you guys dating or not?
Her favorite thing was to butt into Danielle business. It was something Danielle hated when she was younger and only sort of appreciated it now. It was nice to have a sounding board to think out her decisions, even if that sounding board made bad decisions herself. Danielle usually just took all of her sister’s advice with a grain of salt.
I'm not sure to answer that,
Danielle said. She wanted to be dating. She no longer cared about the other people at work, but every time she and Andrew had gone out since she started working for him had ben business related.
Just ask him,
Daria said, and of course he wants to meet her. She is his daughter.
Daria had been the only person she had told, right after Danielle had found out that she was, in fact, pregnant. It had felt good to tell Daria everything, and then forget for a few years.
They definitely should meet, right?
Danielle asked. They had grown up without a dad. Both girls adored their mother, but Danielle wasn't exactly sure how to introduce a man into her daughter's life.
Yes,
Daria said, Emily deserves to have what we never did.
The sisters smiled at each other. Danielle was grateful that her sister was also one of her best friends.
I'm a little nervous,
Danielle admitted.
"What
