About this ebook

It’s peak summertime in New Zealand. It’s a perfect day for a trip to the beach, but Sammy and Tee are no ordinary beach-goers- they are birds. Birds with a purpose, and that is to collect as many pretty shells as they can carry back to their home in the forest. But when an overly-playful dog interrupts their search, they are forced to run in the opposite direction- straight into the scary world of humans.
Join the curious weka Sammy and his friend Tee the rifleman as they navigate the dangers of a human town. Running through streets and over rooftops, they seem to run into new danger after new danger- all the while with a dog hot on their heels.
How will the birds escape and get back to their forest? And what lesson will Sammy learn about camouflage? Learn about New Zealand Flora and Fauna with rich descriptions and a helpful glossary, and become immersed in a birds-eye view of the human world.

    Two Friends

It was a perfect summer afternoon in the forest on the hill. A gentle breeze flowed through the trees, carrying with it the sleepy drone of cicadas. Green light filtered through the forest canopy, casting soft shadows. Smells of sweet flowers, soft soil, and warm leaves all mixed in an earthy aroma. Bees hummed around flowering Manuka trees in the upper forest, while in the lower forest, a stream glistened in the sun, chattering merrily through rocks and reeds.

A weka walked out of the trees and trotted next to the stream. He was a brown, flightless bird, about the size of a chicken, with a short pointed beak. He was chatting to a rifleman, a tiny green bird perched on his back. They seemed to be arguing about something in a friendly sort of way. The weka finished what he was saying and walked along the bank, sometimes pecking at small snails he saw in the mud as he listened to the rifleman speak.

Suddenly, the weka stopped and pointed up with his beak to a branch overhanging the stream. A kingfisher perched there, her tail flicking up and down as if it was continuously touching a hot surface. The green and blue of her feathers glinted in the sunlight, stark against the shadowy forest. She peered with her keen eyes, trying to spy fish in the crystal-clear water. Sighting one, she bobbed her head in excitement before swooping down like a streak of blue lighting.

‘See what I mean, Tee? That proves my point,' said the weka. ‘Shiny the kingfisher doesn't need to have camouflage. She stands out, not blends in. If she doesn't need it, neither do I.'

Tee decided to let the argument go. There was the sound of heavy wings overhead and he pointed at the sky. ‘Look, there are Perry and Swish. I'll bet they're heading towards that tawa tree.'

A pair of kereru soared lazily towards a tawa tree not far off, further from the bank than Sammy and Tee were. Its branches were covered in ripe berries, each a dark purple like vintage wine. Already another pair of kereru were plucking fruit off with their red beaks. The flimsy branch they perched on, already strained by its heavy fruit, wavered and
