Windows Key
Have you ever wondered what that little key in-between the Ctrl and Alt key is for? The one that looks like the Microsoft Windows logo? This is the Windows key. It is what gives you access to a multitude of Windows shortcuts.
Windows Key Opens the Start menu.
Windows Key + e Launches Windows Explorer (similar to My Computer).
Windows Key + f Launches the Find feature.
Windows Key + m or Windows Key + d Minimizes all open windows to the taskbar so that you can see your desktop.
Windows Key + Shift + m Reverses above procedure.
Windows Key + l (in Windows XP). Locks the workstation.
Windows Key + u Brings up Windows Utility Manager.
Windows Key + Tab Cycles through all the buttons on the taskbar (very similar to Alt + Tab). To switch to that application, press the Enter key.
Windows Key + Pause/Break Brings up the System Properties dialog box.
Windows Key + r Brings up the Run dialog box.
Other Windows General
Alt + F4 Closes the active window (extremely useful for pop-up ads in your Web browser).
Ctrl + Shift + Esc Launches Windows Task Manager (in WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP).
Alt + Spacebar Opens the Program Control menu for the active window.
Alt + Spacebar + r Restores the active window if maximized.
Alt + Spacebar + x Maximizes the active window if it has been restored.
Alt + Tab Flips between the most recently-used windows.
Hold Alt + Tab Each press of the Tab key will cycle you through all open applications.
Hold Alt + hold Shift + Tab Same as directly above, but in reverse order.
Alt + Esc Cycles through currently open non-minimized applications.
Alt + Backspace or Ctrl + z Undoes the last action taken.
Ctrl + Tab Cycles you through open documents inside of an application and will also cycle you through available page tabs in a dialog box.
Ctrl + s will save the active document (in most applications).
Ctrl + c Copies selected item (or text).
Ctrl + x Cuts the selected item (or text).
Ctrl + v Pastes the contents of the clipboard into the active document or space.
Windows Explorer Shortcuts
Ctrl + Number pad +
Auto resizes all the columns on the right-hand side when viewing files in Details mode.
Shift + Delete after selecting a file in Windows Explorer, will delete the file, bypassing the Recycling Bin.
Ctrl while dragging a file or folder will create a copy of the dragged item.
Shift while dragging a file or folder will force the item to be moved to the new location.
Shift + F10 Brings up the shortcut menu (right-click on a mouse) for a selected item.
F2 allows you to rename the selected object.
ALT+SPACEBAR - Display the current window’s system menu
SHIFT+F10 - Display the item's context menu
CTRL+ESC - Display the Start menu
ALT+TAB - Switch to the window you last used
ALT+F4 - Close the current window or quit
CTRL+A - Select all items
CTRL+X - Cut selected item(s)
CTRL+C - Copy selected item(s)
CTRL+V - Paste item(s)
CTRL+Z - Undo last action
CTRL+(+) - Automatically resize the columns in the right hand pane
TAB - Move forward through options
ALT+RIGHT ARROW - Move forward to a previous view
ALT+LEFT ARROW - Move backward to a previous view
SHIFT+DELETE - Delete an item immediately
BACKSPACE - View the folder one level up
ALT+ENTER - View an item’s properties
F10 - Activate the menu bar in programs
F6 - Switch between left and right panes
F5 - Refresh window contents
F3 - Display Find application
F2 - Rename selected item
END....... Display the bottom of the active window.
HOME....... Display the top of the active window.
NUM LOCK+ASTERISK....... on numeric keypad (*) Display all subfolders under the selected folder.
NUM LOCK+PLUS SIGN....... on numeric keypad (+) Display the contents of the selected folder.
NUM LOCK+MINUS SIGN....... on numeric keypad (-) Collapse the selected folder.
LEFT ARROW...... Collapse current selection if it's expanded, or select parent folder.
RIGHT ARROW....... Display current selection if it's collapsed, or select first subfolder.
Run Dialog Shortcuts
Many people seem to avoid the Run Dialog box like the plague. However, it can be extremely useful. After bringing up the Run Dialog box, type in: .
(period character) and press Enter. In Win9X, doing so will launch a window containing the items on your desktop. In WinXP, NT and 2000 it will launch a window containing your User Documents and Settings.
Type the name of any system application to launch it. For example, typing in notepad
will launch Notepad, calc
will launch the calculator, charmap
will launch the Character Map and command
will bring up a command line prompt. You can also type in most installed application names to launch the application. For instance, you can type in excel
to launch Excel or winword
to launch Word. In Win9X and WinXp, msconfig
will launch the System Configuration Utility.
