    CHAPTER 1 – TOUGH LIFE

You don’t you man up, and stand for me against your mother? Prema asked her husband Sumit.

Sumit and Prema were like any other normal middle class couple living in the suburbs of Bangalore. Sumit had a small money-lending company which offered loans to people. Sumit was a good person who was completely devoted to his family but by nature he was a bit meek and submissive. Due to this he faced many financial losses as a result of bad debts.

Prema was a 28 year housewife just a year younger than her husband. She was the complete opposite of her husband. Prema was outspoken, confident and mentally strong. She was the same height as her husband but was more stronger than him.

This was Prema’s second marriage. Her previous marriage ended when her husband and child had died due to a freak accident. She spent the next couple of years like a living corpse. Her in-laws saw her as inauspicious and accused her for the death of her husband and they had deserted her. Hence she was back in her parents’ house. Prema’s dad had a small transport business. She had a mother and younger brother too.

After a couple of years after she had become a widow her parents arranged for her to be married to Sumit. Sumit’s mother was a bit money-minded and asked for a lot of dowry. Prema’s pleas went into deaf ears and her parents spent a lot of money on a lavish wedding and loads of dowry requirements. This made a huge dent in their financial situation and slowly her parents became debt-ridden and her father died.

Life was not all rosy for Prema’s at Sumit’s house. She was constantly taunted and tormented regarding her previous marriage which Prema bore silently without and complains. Sumit’s sister Rohini seemed to have more balls than Sumit as she used to take Prema’s side during any arguments unlike her brother who would remain a mute spectator

Prema wanted to work so that she could give her mother and brother some money as monthly allowance. But Sumit’s mother was adamant that she should stay home and be a housewife like any respectable young woman.

I shall speak to her Sumit mumbled not daring to gaze at his angry wife.

To his credit Sumit never complained about Prema’s previous marriage. He loved his wife as much as she did him. But he was very submissive and meek by nature which irritated Prema.

Prema felt angry at her helpless condition. But she was unsure as what to could be the solution for her problems.

On their first wedding anniversary Sumit had promised her that they both would go on a European tour and he had also promised that he would give her 15,000Rs every month secretly which she could give her mother. Prema was absolutely elated and looked forward for better future. Sumit’s mother Sujatha had to go to Delhi for a few months as she had to help a niece during her final stages of pregnancy.

    CHAPTER 2 – COSTLY MISTAKES

A week before their expected trip Sumit gave Prema the cold news.

What do you mean by we cannot go to the trip? asked Prema.

I don’t have money for the trip replied Sumit.

But I saw 10 lakhs in your account just a couple of days back asked Prema with a puzzled look. Sumit lowered his head without replying.

Answer me Sumit Prema asked again.

We lost the money he mumbled.

What do you mean by we lost the money? she asked in absolute shock.

Well………………..er……….I met an old schoolmate yesterday who made crores by betting on horses. I had gone to a race course yesterday. Initially I won around a lakh. But later lost a couple as I was greedy to earn more. Then I wanted to recover the lost money and one thing led to another and I lost around 15 lakhs Sumit answered timidly.

Prema felt like there was an earthquake. She couldn’t believe what she heard. Her husband had just gambled away 10 lakhs which was actually the blood and sweat of her dead father. Prema was enraged. She felt enough was enough and it was time she took control.

    ****************************************

The next day she went to Sumit’s office along with him and spent the whole day studying the profit and loss records. She went numb by the end of the day as Sumit seemed to have written off around a few lakhs as bad debts. These had been offered to people who had a record of bad credit history.

Sumit just brushed off Prema’s concerns saying that bad debts were a part of his business and he could easily earn them back by charging high interest rates for others.

A couple of days later Prema learnt from Sushma, who was Sumit’s secretary and the sole employee of the company, that Sumit had just given a loan of 50 lakhs at a high interest rate to a person with a very very low credibility.

That night Prema and Sumit had a huge fight which changed their lives forever.

    *****************************************

You have just lost 15 lakhs beacuse of gambling and now you have taken this risk of giving a loan to Auto garage Srinivas. Don’t you know how notorious he is regarding reapayment Prema and Sumit were going round and round in their argument.

He has promised me that he will pay me back 1 lakh a week for the next 100 weeks which means a profit of 50 lakhs Sumit tried to defend himself.

Forget about the profit I am afraid we will not even receive the 50 lakhs which has been lent to him Prema argued

Why are you so interested in how I handle my business? It’s my responsibility and I know what to do said Sumit angrily

Because, the money you are spending lavishly is my father’s hard-earned money which I shall not let washed away easily because of your inability and stupidity shouted Prema.

Sumit was at loss of words momentarily, but he gathered courage and shot back.

Look, I am a man and know what I am doing. Earning bread on the tale is my responsibility and I don’t want a woman constantly nagging at me regarding my responsibilities.

Prema had and enough of it and threw a challenge at him.

Let's make a bet. I do not believe that he will pay you each week. Are you willing to back up your statement? she asked confidently.

All right, I'm tired of your nagging. I will bet that he will pay each week until the loan is repaid in full. If Srinivas pays, you are never to speak again about my loan to Rodney or the gambling loss . Do you agree? Sumit asked.

"You have a bet. However, I want you to agree to the following terms. Each week that you do not receive a minimum 1 lakh payment, you must exchange two pieces of your clothing for a corresponding article of women’s clothing or atleast two male attributes to female attributes. If you cannot act like a man,
