      Chapter 1

      Hunter

      October 28, 1872 – Kansas

      The whisper at the back of Hunter’s mind began soon after he left Emporia. He'd headed southeast toward Joplin, intending to take the shortest route home. He tried to reason with the voices, at first.

      A New Orleans riverboat and a game of cards sound mighty fine.

      But the whispers did not relent.

      The cramp in his stomach warned him not to ignore their message.

      But it's time to head home, before the winter winds begin to blow.

      Logic had nothing to do with the voices and didn't sway them this time, either. Hunter shook his head and turned his horse southwest, hoping like hell the mild fall weather would last. As soon as their destination changed, the cramp eased, and the urgency eased. He’d been caught in a Kansas blizzard before, and it was already the end of October. But there was no choice. He knew his course in life was not always one he set for himself. And those damn voices would be the first to tell him that.

      Apologies, Roulette, ma très chère. He patted his mare's neck. The least my troublesome friends could do is tell me what is so important in Wichita—but no, they like a mystery."

      * * *

      Well after sunset, two days later, Hunter stopped in Delano, Kansas, for a whiskey and room for the night. Delano was a dangerous little town. There was no law on this side of the river, but there was gambling. He could also keep his gun right where he liked it—by his side.

      The piano player pounded out a ragtime tune as Hunter stepped into Rowdy Joe's. The dance hall smelled of spilled liquor and stale smoke. Two card games were in progress, and three women performed on stage, encouraging men to buy dances from them.

      He recognized Kip Fray at one of the card tables.

      And there it is. Almost too easy.

      Whiskey, he ordered from the barkeep, and then leaned against the bar to watch the card games. It looked like Fray was winning.

      I might have to do something about that.

      Hunter had seen Fray's wanted poster at the Emporia telegraph office. The man had robbed a stagecoach and shot the driver in May. His intuition, as he called the voices, usually didn't speak to him of bounties, and they had never considered one urgent.

      Then again, this will be easy cash.

      Hunter grinned and glanced at the barkeep. I want to buy that table a round of drinks. He tossed the balding bartender a silver half dollar.

      Yes, sir. The man's guarded eyes flashed to Hunter's face as he grabbed an open bottle and shuffled toward the table. He cast a wary look back, and then interrupted the game to top off everyone's glass.

      Hunter raised his whiskey taster to the table when the barkeep pointed him out and then finished his drink. He leaned his elbows on the bar catching his reflection in the dirty mirror behind the bottles. A tall man with a swarthy complexion reflected in the smoke-stained glass. Skin dark enough in summer to pass as Indian or Mexican, whichever best suited his purpose. Upon occasion, a man might question the color of his eyes—deep blue. Women, however, never bothered to look past the scar.

      The mark on his face ran from the outside of his left eye to his chin, a sharp line down his tanned cheek. Memorable and conspicuous. He turned his head to view his undamaged profile. Occasionally, a woman might approach
