How To Write Well - Patrick Angell

    Introduction

    First Skill: Writing

As an Internet entrepreneur, your writing has to be persuasive and compelling. Your language has to be simple and yet the message must be clearly and powerfully portrayed. Another important thing about writing on the Internet is the variety that this skill calls for. You might have to write an article, a blog-post on one of the social media platforms, a response to a blog, a post or a comment, etc. As you grow in your business, you could even find the compulsion to write books for your readers in your niche. Writing is not something that can be improved overnight. It takes oodles of patience, plenty of hard work, and even more reading to get better.

Chapter One: How to Write Better

Here are some great quick-fixes that will almost immediately take your writing a few notches above:

Be natural Write like how you would speak as much as possible without the slang, of course. Let me illustrate this point through an example. "The den was suddenly devoid of light. This sentence simply translates to, The room went dark, unless, of course, the book is from a much earlier period of time. Stick to The room went dark."

Ruthlessly remove all unnecessary words and phrases Read all your sentences and ensure that there are no unnecessary (and, many times, unduly colorful) adjectives and adverbs. Avoid writing things that are obvious. Example: "The luminescence from the full moon shone down from the sky could simply be written as The light from the full moon shone down. You could easily avoid from the sky" since it is obvious that the moon is in the sky! And the word ‘light’ sounds so much more natural than ‘luminescence.’

Keep your sentences small and avoid giving excessive data all at once Don’t try to fit in all the information into one long sentence as it could overwhelm and/or put off the reader not to mention the much higher chances of making grammatical mistakes. Take for example the sentence, The daughter of the multimillionaire global hotel chain rags-to-riches owner is a rich and spoilt brat who needs to be taught a lesson in manners. Isn’t there too much information in one sentence? Break up these kinds into two or more simpler sentences for ease of reading and understanding.

Beware of clichés Clichés render a monotonous kind of predictability to your writing and makes it appear unprofessional. Go through
