About this ebook

Seoul is Korea's industrial capital, but Busan is arguably its capital of cool, with many prominent Koreans hailing from the country's second-biggest city. Like New Yorkers in the U.S., there's something special about the sounds and the swagger of these seaside people. Ever wondered what makes Busan dialect unique and gives Busanians their distinctive character?

This primer deconstructs the most relevant aspects of Busan dialect and makes them accessible to you, the Korean learner. With 25 bite-sized lessons and over 100 examples in both Busan and Seoul versions, this book will improve your confidence in communicating with the people from this undeniably cool port city.

Free audio downloads are available to accompany the lessons, featuring four different Busan voices to challenge and improve your listening skills. Great for a quick read on the plane or as a reference as you explore the city, take your Korean understanding to the next level with this primer!

Note: This book assumes knowledge of the Korean alphabet 한글, and is therefore best suited to intermediate learners.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    Introduction

The Korean word 사투리 means non-standard language. When I visited Busan more than a decade ago for the first time, having already taken two semesters of Seoul Korean in the U.S., I discovered that the language spoken by my girlfriend’s family was decidedly non-standard. Busan dialect was edgier, louder, and most definitely cooler. My studies in the standard Seoul dialect felt worthless in her hometown. This book is the guide I wish I had in those early years: a reliable, accessible introduction to Cool Korean—the dialect of Busan.

Why study dialect? Admittedly, you don't need to speak Busan dialect, as Busanians will understand you if you speak in 서울말. Thus the focus of this book is on understanding, not speaking dialect. When my girlfriend moved to the U.S., she rapidly became fluent in English, but whenever we watched movies featuring non-standard English dialogue (British, Australian, American South, New York, Indian,
