Casket Girls: Cities of the Dead, #1

About this ebook
In New Orleans, the cemeteries are filled with above-ground tombs that resemble tiny houses. Some people call these cemeteries “cities of the dead.” Casket Girls is the first book in the Cities of the Dead series.
The summer of 1728 was a dreary time in the fledgling settlement of New Orleans. The men were lonely and morale was low. Work was at a standstill. If the king wanted a picturesque town that would lure new settlers, he had to find a way to motivate the bachelors.
The settlers were excited when they learned that the Le Pelican carried prospective brides, but the new arrivals quickly turn the town upside down. Jacques never believed the stories of vampires in the new world, but he knew there was evil among them. His determination to reveal the truth behind a murder leads to another murder, and the town is torn apart. The casket girls are labeled as vampires and become the target of many. They need a true hero to save them from an angry mob, but do vampires or heroes exist?

Casket Girls - Amy Pilkington
Chapter One
M an overboard!
The captain jumped out of bed and raced to the deck. He looked out over the water. Nothing. Thick clouds hid the light of the moon, and the pitch-black night made it impossible to see a man bobbing in the water. He grabbed the railing and held tight as the rough seas rocked the ship from side to side. He knew he had little chance of finding the drowning crew member under these conditions, but he still had to try.
A streak of lightning shot from the clouds and lit up the sky. He saw it. The looming storm had created a rogue wave, and it was about to strike the ship. There was little time to brace for impact. He huddled by the rail and screamed, Wave!
The men grabbed whatever they could find and held on tight as they prepared for the sea to unleash its fury on the Le Pelican. The violent surge of water knocked the ship on its side, and the crew struggled to hold on until the wave broke over the ocean. Once it had passed and the ship was righted, the drenched men scurried across the deck and took stock of the damage.
Captain! Captain, over here!
He slid across the wet deck and crashed into the deckhand. The wave must have tossed him back aboard the ship,
the man said and pointed near the captain’s feet.
The body of the crewman was sprawled out on the deck. The tumultuous sea had delivered him back to the vessel whence he came. The captain placed his ear on the man’s chest and shook his head. He turned the man’s head to the side and spotted two puncture wounds on his neck. The man was dead, but he had not drowned in the sea.
A shark, Cap’n?
A shark would have torn him apart and left him in pieces. That many teeth would leave a mark much worse than this.
A crowd gathered around the dead man, and the youngest member of the crew pushed his way to the front of the group. He saw the marks and screamed, "Les envempure. There is evil on this ship!"
The captain shook his head. He knew he had to put a stop to this before fear spread, or else he would lose his crew when they docked in the next port.
Nonsense. You’ll not scare the men with talk of vampires.
He stood before the crowd and waved his hands above his head to get their attention. Men, there is no such thing. This man was injured when he fell from the ship or was thrown back on the ship. Now, prepare to commit his body to a watery grave. He lived on the sea. He died in the sea. He’ll be buried at sea.
The crew carried the body away to wrap it in clean linens and prepare it for burial at sea. After the captain was satisfied that the men were following his orders, he returned to his quarters. He shook his head in disbelief. How could this happen so very far from shore? The captain took off his waterlogged boots and said a silent prayer for their safe passage to the colony. He drew in a deep breath and whispered, God, save us all.
Chapter Two
The sea was a beast , and the passengers and crew of the Le Pelican had already fought a lengthy battle in their quest to reach the new world. They had endured treacherous weather for much of their journey, and they were weary from being tossed about by the stormy seas. The dock at Cuba was a welcome sight. All were anxious to step foot on solid ground, and the men were ready to blow off some steam. Deckhands cheered when the captain announced they would spend the night on dry land.
Women aboard the battered ship were ushered to the small church just inside the little town. It was their last stop before
