About this ebook

The bestselling author of Merle’s Door offers a “moving, pictorial love story” of man and his new best friend—full of dog care knowledge and insight (People).

After Ted Kerasote’s beloved dog Merle passed, the author received thousands of emails asking two questions: “Have you gotten another dog?” and “Are you writing a new book?” Now, the bestselling canine lover answers both, in the most heartwarming way.

Told in Pukka the pup’s charming voice and accompanied by more than 200 photos, Pukka: The Pup After Merle tells the story of how Ted found Pukka. It recounts the early days of their bonding as they explored both Ted’s hometown of Kelly, Wisconsin, and the wider world. As walks become hikes and hikes become climbs, pup and man’s adventures culminate in a rugged wilderness journey that teaches both Pukka and Ted something new about the dog-human partnership.

Filled with stunning images of the West—and adorable pictures of Pukka—this book also shares Ted’s in-depth research on the best food, toys, and medical choices he could provide to ensure that Pukka would live the longest, healthiest life possible.

“Glimpses of Pukka’s charmed life are interwoven with vast amounts of important information . . . that [encourage] you to draw your own conclusions and make the best choices for you and your dog.” —The Bark

All fans of Merle's Door , one of the best dog memoirs out there will want to check this book out, but this book is way different. For one thing, it is a picture book. You'll "read" it in under a half hour, but there are some spectacular pictures, not only of dogs (Pukka plus a lot of dog buddies), but also of the amazing scenery where Ted and Pukka live up in Wyoming, and their trips to Idaho and the Oregon coast.I pre-ordered this book on Amazon, because I had enjoyed Merle's Door so much, and I like to reward authors who entertain me that well by purchasing their books. This is a nice book to own, one that you can look at the wonderful photographs over and over again. It also makes you really wish we all were in a position to give a dog that kind of life; all dogs should be so lucky.

Not in the same league as "Merle's Door" but a pleasant read with lots of photos. Reading this book would be a simple, easy way to learn good, basic dog training.

Okay, this is one of those quick reads story wise but the accompanying photographs are what will give you paws...excuse me, pause. Seriously...once I picked it up, I finished it in a sitting. EVERY PAGE has a photo to take you along on Pukka and Ted's adventures. From the adorably cute to those captured on their many wilderness hikes, it seems this pair though still in the beginning phases of their relationship (as Pukka is only 6 months old by the book's end) have created a strong bond of friendship, love, and loyalty that will serve them well in the years to come. Recommended reading for fans of the author's previous work about his first puppy friend Merle, as well as dog lovers the world wide. Just try not to smile at the antics of this young beauty as he grows from precocious little one to a boisterous fun loving pup ready to take on the world. A touching recollection of puppyhood if I've ever seen one....happy reading!

On rubyrebel's wishlist, bought to read first. Mostly pictures, with captions, telling Pukka's first 6 months of life. Read Merle first - the captions will make much more sense if you do that (because as the title says, it's really about the puppy that came after Merle, so knowing Merle's story helps)

Ted Kerasote’s name is linked indelibly to his yellow lab Merle – a dog who touched his heart and became the subject of Kerasote’s best selling book Merle’s Door. When Merle died, Kerasote received thousands of emails asking if he was going to get another dog. Fans need not ask the question any longer. Pukka, a yellow lab whose face reminded the author of Merle, has found his forever home with Kerasote.Narrated in the wise and charming voice of Pukka, Kerasote’s latest book is heartwarming, yet also bittersweet. The reader cannot help but feel the loss of Merle between the pages despite the obvious love for Pukka. Our hearts are always big enough to hold another canine partner, but we never forget those who came before.Perhaps the best part of this sweet book are the more than two hundred photos which include Pukka as a young pup, as well as stunning images of the Tetons and other natural environments where Pukka gets lessons in swimming, canoeing and hiking to the tops of mountain peaks. This wonderful book is perfect for readers of all ages and would make a wonderful book for children who have lost a dog and are getting a new puppy. The gorgeous photography also make it a great gift for dog lovers (especially those who love labs!).Readers who have had the joy of experiencing life with a dog will undoubtedly see themselves and their canine friends between the pages of Kerasote’s book. Pukka: The Pup After Merle is highly recommended as a quick, enjoyable read for adults and children alike.

Old Christmas is past, twelve tide is the last

And we bid you adieu, great joy to the new.

—from The King, Traditional English Carol

Some of you may remember Merle and Ted from a book he wrote about their life in Wyoming. They shared a lot of adventures, and Ted missed Merle terribly when he died.

That’s why Ted didn’t get another dog right away. He spent a lot of time by himself, skiing in the mountains, as he and Merle had done, while he wrote Merle’s story.

Then he traveled on Merle’s book tour, meeting many other dogs and their people.

One day in Minnesota, he met my mom, Abby, and she reminded him of Merle. She was calm and even looked like Merle.

She had a litter of three-day-old pups, but Ted couldn’t take one home with him because he was going to be traveling on Merle’s book tour for a long time.

He never forgot my mom, though, and a year later she had another litter with my dad, Taylor.

My dad lives in Minnesota, too, and he and my mom knew each other, and liked each other a lot, before they had pups together.

A day after I was born, Ted flew to Minnesota and saw me. I couldn’t see him, though, because my eyes were still closed.

I guess he liked me and my brothers and sisters, because seven weeks later, there he was again, seeing us all grown up and ready for our new homes.

He did puppy aptitude tests with us.

And I was his favorite out of the litter. He thought that I was athletic . . .

and calm . . .

and affectionate.
