About this ebook

AT DCI, WE BELIEVE IT IS 'GROWTH'

Mumbai, 2061

Josh found the bar he was looking for. The city of Mumbai was always crowded, with cars packed from sidewalk to sidewalk, marching through the street in tightly packed lines.

He had asked the front desk clerk where the nearest working-man-whiskey bar was, and after asking for a second set of directions while lost, Josh found the pink neon sign that read, “And Mortar” just above a smaller hand-made sign that read, “Genes Not Welcome“. At the front door, a quick prick of his finger, an excuse for the beanie on his head, and a satisfied bouncer offered him entrance.

Josh moved through the mass of people, through the crowd of the discontented poor looking for solace in bottles. His knowledge of bars led him toward where the bar should be, and sure enough, he found it, along with another sign labeled, “No Pluses at the Bar”. His agent, Gerry Sandoval, had once used the word ‘seedy’ to describe dinky dive bars, but he wasn’t quite sure that this would count.

Josh found the bar he was looking for. The city of Mumbai was always crowded, with cars packed from sidewalk to sidewalk, marching through the street in tightly packed lines.

He had asked the front desk clerk where the nearest working-man-whiskey bar was, and after asking for a second set of directions while lost, Josh found the pink neon sign that read, And Mortar just above a smaller hand-made sign that read, Genes Not Welcome. At the front door, a quick prick of his finger, an excuse for the beanie on his head, and a satisfied bouncer offered him entrance.

Josh moved through the mass of people, through the crowd of the discontented poor looking for solace in bottles. His knowledge of bars led him toward where the bar should be, and sure enough, he found it, along with another sign labeled, No Pluses at the Bar. His agent, Gerry Sandoval, had once used the word ‘seedy’ to describe dinky dive bars, but he wasn’t quite sure that this would count. The bar was dim, lit softly by the handful of faded bulbs hanging from the ceiling and the glow of the dozen credit pads in front of the seats at the bar. He found a vacant seat and ordered a whiskey and cola, then pulled down the back of his beanie and fingered the edge, looking for any bits of his install that might be exposed.

He downed his first drink and motioned for another, just before swiping his hand over the bar to leave the handful of credits he owed. Turning to face the many patrons, he spotted a third handmade sign Pluses Section above a dark corner. The seats were worn and seemed to have been made from a long since rotted wood and had, what appeared to be, a dozen or so rusty nails sticking out from each seat. The table was equally decrepit and just as nail-ridden, sporting a look that didn’t belong in this century.

Hey! You’re Cordero, aren‘t you? a drunk, seated beside him, slurred. Yeah, congrats on the win last month. What was the slant on you guys? Something like six t’ one, right? Hell of a lethal.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Josh turned his attention back to his drink and tried to casually stand up but was met with the drunk’s firm grasp on his shoulder. Josh looked at the drunk, saw his worn clothes and the dirt under his fingernails, and assumed he was just a laborer trying to drink his day away.

Hey, man, don’ lie; I know it’s you. I had money riding on that game. You made me some serious credits.

Can you not? Josh peeled the greasy hand from his shoulder. I think you have me mistaken for someone else. Each man turned back to their respective drinks, but not before a second drinker noticed the conversation.

Hey, that guy’s right; you are Cordero. Let me buy you a drink, man. You’ve got that title ‘Lethal’ tomorrow, don’t you? You could use the extra drink. The second drinker squeezed in beside Josh, opposite of the drunken man, and waved the barkeep over.

    Thank you but-

Oh yeah. You’ve got to begin tomorrow. The drunken man edged back into Josh’s life. That free-for-all. What is it? Three Pluses and three Genes or something? Looks like it’s going to be a good one. The drunken man’s words made Josh’s palms sweat. He tried to leave before anyone made the connection, but the drunken man’s words were heard by more sober patrons, and
