    Introduction

Who doesn’t want to save money? Every homeowner or renter is eager to find ways to reduce the costs of owning and operating their homes. There may be little you can do about the cost of your mortgage, property taxes, or other costs. You might not be able to change the rates charged by the local utilities, but you can still reduce the amount of money you pay them by decreasing the amount of gas, water, and electricity you use on a daily basis.

Some changes to improve energy efficiency are big and some are small. Some are things you can do yourself, quickly and easily; others are complicated projects that require a contractor. But what all these projects have in common is that they put you in control. While you may not be able to reduce your energy bills to zero, you can reduce them substantially. And you can do so without making any major changes to your home or lifestyle. This is low-hanging fruit: money just waiting to be saved that you can spend on more meaningful or fun things in your family’s life. Some projects make require an upfront investment and some may require some elbow grease on your part, but they will all save you money in the long run.

And your wallet isn’t the only beneficiary. In today’s world, climate change is having a bigger and bigger impact. Fossil fuels emit pollutants into the atmosphere and water. They are also a finite resource, meaning that someday we will run out of them. Most power plants in the United States rely on some kind of fossil fuel. So, by decreasing your home’s energy usage, you are decreasing our country’s spending and reliance on this finite and dirty resource. It’s a win-win for your family, your home, your wallet, the environment, and the world.
