They asked the couple's personal secretary, a young, pretty woman named Boo, to look live with them. Pierce admits to being in love with Boo, but never acting on it. The tension in the house was enough make Maria take her own life.

Chapter 1
Mrs. Pierce Demons
It was gradual, nothing serious. Losing an hour or two wasn’t noticed. It simply progressed. Just as time doesn’t stand still neither did her loss of sleep. Mrs. Pierce wasn’t aware until the second night she hadn’t been able to sleep, nor was she tired and it was five-thirty in the morning. Living on the Pierce Plantation with her husband, Breezy, and Boo Shansi, and the nearest neighbor being one mile away. There was no one she could talk too, so she decided to take a drive, and get some fresh air and enjoy the pleasant breeze, extremely different from the blistering day’s heat. Backing out of the driveway she started down the road towards the James River Bridge not thinking of much except the stars and how peaceful everything was.
