There are so many books on memory but this one is really different. This book can be read from start to finish or from whatever chapter you find of interest but the point is like learning and memory, it is all interconnected. The book addresses ways to learn, improve, accelerate, train and develop your memory and brain power at whatever age or stage in life whether a student, office worker, retired, and or experiencing bouts of absentmindedness perhaps due to menopause.
The book introduces advanced strategies and tips, but it considers a spectrum of other factors that greatly affect memory and what you can do to support and maintain poor memory. There are different modes of memory, and it can be used to your advantage and in other cases, memory changes and shows us how fragile memory can be.
INTRODUCTION
Have you ever entered a room and forgotten why you went in there?
Have you opened the fridge and wondered what you are looking for? I have often placed a cereal box into the fridge myself many at time; it is the first place that I go to when I cannot find something sometimes.
Have you searched in your handbag wasting time looking for your keys?
This book contains techniques to guide absentmindedness and improve your memory recollection.
Memories help us to make sense of new information by searching for a link that we already know. When we process information and search our memory for links to our past experiences, this creates anticipations for the future. Our memories contain certain conditions which influence our thinking and behaviour when we experience something similar. A bad experience in a relationship for example might influence us the next time we decide to date someone. Our experiences can become undifferentiating to the same meaning for future experiences of a similar nature i.e. all relationships thereafter.
Our emotions are so closely related to our memories and each of our memories contains contextual elements to it such as: what, who, where, how etc. with emotions linked with the experience. How many times have you recalled a memory of something that conjures up intense strong emotions and feelings? The same feelings produced from the original experience?
Yet there are other situations that happen and you perceived yet you cannot recall or retrieve the information about it?
Similar to other muscles in the body, the brain needs exercise to stay in shape and perform at its peak. There are unfortunately, factors such as age, illness, stress, and poor diet can cause temporary to permanent memory loss. This book will explain the way memory works, and show you how to effectively combat memory loss. With simple techniques, you can increase the capacity of your short-term memory, process new information into your long-term memory, and increase your ability to access stored memories.

The next time you put an item down somewhere; try and make sure you are in the present moment
they say, this meaning you are not preoccupied thinking about something else or someone else! So basically you are consciously aware of yourself putting the item down on the table for example or, aware you are placing the item in the cupboard. Encourage your attention to make an association between the object and your surroundings or the location you are in because we seem to memorise far better with a context or some kind of background story to things. It primes us to remember better later on.

Chapter 1 – BRAIN WORK-OUT TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY SYSTEM
Representation systems
We represent or categorise information internally by our five senses: as pictures, sounds, feelings, smells and tastes. Our senses are our information input channels or sensors. Whatever we take in from the external world we internalize it, follow it like a sensory journey mixed together with our senses. Our thoughts are influenced by this fascinating multi-sensory system and over time we develop preferences in the way we use them.
Our primary representation systems are: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic as known in the western world. Our olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) systems trigger the other systems. However, in the eastern world, smell and taste are more commonly used as primary systems than in the west. This could be because good food is a very important factor in the eastern world.
Memory exercise:
Imagine putting your house keys into your handbag or pocket, and as you place it into the mouth of your handbag it then suddenly bites you and swallows up your keys! Yes the crazier the thought the better. This crazy thinking forces your mind to wake up, focus, think and become active and present while you are placing the house keys into your handbag, simple.
Here is another example to encourage remembering, imagine placing your car keys on to the dish washer if you have one or TV, and the dish washer or TV explodes and water bursts out everywhere. In the case of the TV, wires from behind spout out and reach the ceiling.
Try another exercise, leaving your mobile phone in your overcoat pocket and imagine your coat telephones you from your own mobile to say to you that the mobile is in your coat’s pocket!
How about this one, leaving your TV remote control on the couch, now imagine the couch getting up on all four legs and walking towards you, saying here it is your remote control!

Verbal memory
Our brain has many different mental processes.
We have a verbal memory using words:
Acronyms (or abbreviations)
Acrostics (mind-benders, puzzles)
Word associations (pairing words together)
Rhymes (jingles, poems)
Songs (tunes or melodies)
They all seem to require repetition and some of us find it easier to remember in this way.
