    Introduction

    There’s a new economic paradigm shift that so many people are still oblivious to. According to Catherine Rampell in the New York Times article , Many with New College Degree Find the Job Market Humbling:

    New evidence is emerging that the damage wrought by the sour economy is more widespread than just a few careers led astray or postponed. Even for college graduates—the people who were most protected from the slings and arrows of recession—the outlook is rather bleak.

    Caroline M. Hoxby, a Stanford economist, and Jeffrey R. Brown from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign unequivocally make the case that it is more likely for students, during times of recession, where there are fewer jobs, to stay in school longer. Their arguments were presented at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) Conference held September 27-28, 2012, and are now part of a collaborative book, How the Financial Crisis and Great Recession Affected Higher Education, of which they are editors.⁷

    Kaitlin Madden of CareerBuilder.com echoed the same sentiment as was evident in recent yesteryears. She noted that hiring of new college graduates began to decline in 2008 when companies first started feeling the effects of the recession. By 2009, the graduating class was faced with industry-wide hiring freezes. Things started to look up for the class of 2010, but companies—many of which had gotten used to doing more with less—were still hiring cautiously.⁸ A similar CNN article, Fresh Out of College, Slim Hope for a Job, didn’t give a better picture either.⁹

    Have the most recent times changed this trend? Not according to "The Class of 2015: Despite an Improving Economy, Young Grads Still Face an Uphill Climb." It was one of the most thorough reports on the subject matter and part of Raising America’s Pay, a multiyear research and public education initiative of the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) to make wage growth an urgent national policy priority. It states:

    The Great Recession has had lasting effects on employment prospects of young people entering the workforce after graduating from high school or college. Despite officially ending in June 2009, the recession left millions unemployed for prolonged spells, with recent workforce entrants such as young graduates being particularly vulnerable.

    Due to the progression of the economic recovery and a modest improvement in the unemployment rate, members of the Class of 2015 currently have better job prospects than the classes of 2009–2014. However, the Class of 2015 still faces real economic challenges, as evidenced by elevated levels of unemployment and underemployment, and a large share of graduates who still remain idled by the economy. In addition, wages of young high school and college graduates have failed to reach their prerecession levels and have in fact stagnated or declined for almost every group since 2000.¹⁰

    These and other challenges are among the reasons for this project. It doesn’t matter what country you’re from or what industry you’re in. The principles and insights you’re about to discover are from current in-the-field practitioners and will furnish you with a proactive response to this and other alarming trends.

    Two years ago, I lost a very dear friend. He’s the humblest man I ever knew, for his young age. I first met him in Zimbabwe in 2007. He was the national director in Zambia for the humanitarian organization where I served as fundraising director and special projects coordinator for many of the foreign branches. He and dozens of volunteers had come to join our group from the US for six weeks of outreach programs in several rural villages of Zimbabwe. Since then we had worked together on similar projects in Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, and Liberia.

    When I transitioned to a new line of service in the summer of 2012, I still worked with my good friend Derrick Banda. The last project we did together was in Tanzania in the summer of 2014 and we were planning for him to return to the rural areas to continue the work we started there and to train many others to do likewise. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. With bright hopes of making an even bigger impact, our hearts and hopes sank into deep sadness and grief when we learned of Derrick Banda’s death in January 2015.

    I wept and spent many days pondering, What does this mean now? Mr. Banda left behind a young family, his wife and two children, his music, and his friends from various countries. How will the mission, message, and cause that he loved continue without means? Who will buy his music if only his close friends know about it? I needed answers.

This is from survey results by The Federal Reserve Board to monitor the financial and economic status of American consumers. The data showed that 47 percent of respondents said that either they would cover the expense by borrowing or selling something, or they would not be able to come up with the $400 at all.¹⁴

    A high percentage of workers want to transition to a more rewarding career or start their own business but are not sure how to do it or are fearful of losing a steady income to take care of their bills.¹⁵ If that’s your situation, or the situation of someone you know, then these stories will help you to connect with your greater Why and show you a proven road map to begin your journey to true financial freedom, in a systematic and confident way.
