Introduction
If you have grown up Desi, you know how important food is to our culture. Food is a great source of comfort for our people, particularly when we socialize. Many hours are filled by sitting around, from chai (tea) to dinner (and beyond). We spend whole days gossiping, talking, laughing, and eating. It reminds us of our time in our homeland and the loved ones we have there. These foods bring back memories of life back where aromatic spices, delicious meats, and warm, fresh breads made the kitchen table the focal point of our homes and where meals were shared by friends and family in a warm and loving atmosphere.
We had all kinds of different foods, starting with aam lassi (or mango lassi), which offsets our spicy foods with its creamy, ever-so-smooth texture. This is followed by kaati roll bites and vada sambar, followed by main courses of hyderabadi chicken biriyani, cabbage with chana daal stir-fry, green beans with cashews, bagaara baingan, dumm aloo, tanddori shrimp tossed with mango, carrots, and red onion salad, cucumbers, and tomato raita. Dinner would follow, with more chai, and of course dessert: warm Qubaani kaa mitha with cool custard or gulaab jamuns and rasgullas. Food was a backdrop but also central, and the easy conversation invited all to linger and of course eat some more.
However this familiar scene and these foods we love so much that are so much a part of our heritage make us overeat and may be killing us. A startling 60 percent of all heart disease in the world affects the Desi population. This is a staggering number. Desi or South Asian people, with origins in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, suffer coronary artery disease (CAD) at up to four times the rate of the rest of the planet’s population. And unfortunately, conventional screening and treatment do not address the extremely high rates of premature heart attacks among Desis. Many of us suffer heart attacks at an early age, oftentimes without prior symptoms or warning signs. One study among Asian Indian men showed that half of all heart attacks in this population occur under the age of fifty and 25 percent under the age of forty. The worst part is that few physicians in the United States and the subcontinent regularly screen South Asian men and women for these factors prior to a cardiac event.[1]
Our community features an incredibly high incidence of risk factors for coronary artery disease, including insulin resistance, diabetes, a high lipid profile, a generally sedentary lifestyle, and increased, sustained levels of stress. Traditional risk factors do not fully explain the marked increase in the incidence of heart disease among South Asians. These factors seem to go hand in hand with some others that may play a critical role in CAD among the South Asian population. These emerging risk factors include fibrinogen, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, low HDL, HDL2b, high triglycerides, small dense LDL, homocysteine, and lipoprotein (a).[2]
How Did Our Culture Get Like This?
Let’s face it: in South Asia, there is no concept of health and fitness. South Asians are proud of the ways our culture has been at the vanguard of today’s global economy. But even with our global economy changing the world in profound ways every day, our culture’s concern for basic health and fitness is woefully inadequate.
Think back to your mother’s pantry in your childhood home. Can you remember any food that actually came with a nutrition label? Of course not; but we happily ate anything and everything, with little concern for what was actually going into our bodies. We would eat tons of food filled with gee (one of the worst types of fat), not to mention the constant supply of roti and paratha (breads) slathered in butter. But of course, it would be too easy to just blame everything on our parents and our culture at large.
Generally, no matter where in the world we live, there are several principal reasons that people develop unhealthy eating habits. The first reason is too few meals during the day. When we go on a diet, we tend to skip meals—particularly breakfast. However, these meals we skip early in the day add up in bad ways. They result in an overwhelming temptation to eat more later in the day. Skip breakfast, and you may find yourself stuffing your face with roti and paratha later—or worse yet, standing in line at a fast food restaurant.
Being unaware of calories and fat is a second disturbing principle. Most of us eat with no regard to the caloric and/or fat content of the foods we ingest. This can lead to weight gain and increased unhealthy eating habits. It is not difficult to eat one-and-a-half or even twice the normal calories required to maintain your weight if you have no idea how many calories you are eating.
Unfortunately, junk food leads to more junk food. As you probably already know, eating unhealthy food makes you crave even more unhealthy food. A handful of chips, for example, will leave you wanting another handful, and so on. (Betcha can’t eat just one
was the slogan for one chip brand, in fact, for good reason.)
American society has finally started to understand the negative effects of poor eating habits; increased attention is being paid to better eating and more reasonable portion sizes. For example, many areas are now mandating that restaurants post the calorie content of all their menu items. Additionally, more and more low-calorie and low-fat options are available both in our supermarkets and restaurants that were not around even a decade ago. Additionally, our public school students are given healthier meal options. Wide now have several 24/7 cable food channels (with many of the programs focusing on healthy cooking), and nutritionists are sprouting up everywhere.
Unfortunately, our Desi population lags behind in both proper nutrition and exercise. Some have faced challenges adapting to the food and culture; the lifestyle is so different they are not sure how to adjust. I work as a fitness trainer in New York, and I joke that I can always spot the Desi. Typically, they seem oddly perplexed by even basic workout equipment. However, this scene reflects a more serious problem, one that comes down to our basic beliefs about the value of exercise and nutrition.
Why Is Food So Important to Our Health?
Sure, we have known for ages that eating too much will make us gain weight. More recently, one scientific study after the other has proved that obesity is linked to many diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, several types of cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gout, gallbladder-related diseases, and others. However, over the past two decades, a scientific revolution, the mapping of our genes has helped us to better understand the dynamic impact that food has on our bodies. This new science, termed nutrigenomics—the science of how food talks to your genes—can lead to incredible health benefits.
Nutrigenomics is not about finding the perfect diet. We used to
