About this ebook

This book was inspired by an Exploratory Arts school project for our son in middle school. The profound influence this school project had on our son and our entire family motivated us to continue collecting Drunk and Drugged Driving statistics so we could provide "Daily Doses of Reality" to you and your family. Twelve years later, our youngest son is now 24 years old and he survived his teenage years without accidents or incidents involving drugs or alcohol. We consider ourselves a very lucky family; statistics show that one in every five people will be affected by a drunk or drugged driver at one time in their lives.

    Dedication

    This book is dedicated to:

    •   All the families that lost a loved one to an alcohol or drug related accident or incident.

    •   To all the members of MADD (Mothers against Drunk Driving) whose mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. And to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving.

    •   To all of the nonprofit organizations that devote their time and energy to keep our loved ones safe and educated about the problems of drinking and drugs.

    •   My family and friends whose help and contributions made this project possible.

"Hey Mom, Jason said as he stuck his head in the refrigerator seconds after walking in the door. Can you help me with my school project for my Exploratory Arts Class? I’m not sure what to write; it’s supposed to be about saying no to drugs and alcohol and how to get teenagers to understand how bad it is for us".

"Sure, when’s the project due? I asked. He responded with one of his typical 12 year old answers Well, I was supposed to start a couple of weeks ago but I forgot; it’s due next Friday".

We sat down to discuss the project requirements and format options, a written report, movie, song, short story or any other creative idea Jason could come up with. We decided to research drug and alcohol statistics and present them in a way to keep them on the minds of his middle school peers creating a calendar with a different statistic for each day of the year.

Jason realized this would take 365 individual stats so he decided to create a calendar with each month highlighting a grim fact or statistic related to drinking and driving or driving drugged. Since he’d already wasted two weeks of his research time; twelve statistics and pictures would be much easier to accomplish on time than 365.

That weekend our family had plans to drive from Southern California to Reno, Nevada. We traveled northbound on Highway 395 passing several roadside crosses, painted and decorated with flowers, cards, ribbons and notes for the loved ones lost in vehicle accidents. We called the crosses Roadside Angels. These crosses are a good reminder of what can happen when you drink and drive or drive drugged. We decided to take pictures of the Roadside Angels to use on the calendar project. Returning home we obtained public pictures of cars destroyed in vehicle accidents and we also included a beautiful picture of a cemetery; all visual effects intended to get the grim picture across loud and clear to pre-teens.

As we gathered statistics it became obvious this project had an overwhelming effect on our son. Jason was shocked by the statistics, facts and pictures while researching which ones to use for the school project. The calendar project opened all of our eyes to the seriousness of the problem.

Jason decided to call his calendar

    A Dose of Reality …

    ***

Over 40% of all the 16-to-20 year olds who died in 1994 were killed in car crashes. Approximately half of those were alcohol related. That’s about 2,222 of our classmates, sports rivals, and Prom Queens and Kings, and friends who died because somebody else chose to drink and drive.
