PROPHET MOHAMMED
(Peace and blessing of Allah be upon him)
The story of the Prophet Mohammed is the best of all stories.
This is a man who changed the world around him in record time. He put other people before himself. People loved and respected him for his honesty and dedication.
This is the story of the greatest man ever.
The world in his day was very different from ours. The Roman-Byzantine Empire and Persian Empire were the superpowers of the world. They controlled the Middle East region between them. In both civilizations, wealth only benefited the rich and the powerful. There was no justice anywhere in the world. Most people suffered greatly at the hands of the powerful. The justice system had collapsed and trade was destroyed because of the many wars that were fought between the two empires. There was a huge gap in lifestyle between the general public and the wealthy rulers. The public suffered from heavy taxes and few services. Emperors had absolute power over their people and did not care about them. People of the lower classes worked hard but had nothing at all.
There were many religions in the empires, including Judaism and Christianity, as well as idol worship and the worship of multiple gods. Many were persecuted for their beliefs and forced to submit to the religion of the current rulers.
To the south of these great empires were the very strong kingdoms of the Red Sea, Ethiopia and Yemen. In between these regions lived the Arabs.
The Arabs were followers of whoever was powerful around them. They were divided into tribes and family groups. Their values centered on the honor of the family, clan, and tribe, honor that was to be defended at all costs. They used to fight amongst each other all the time. These local wars continued for long periods and for the smallest of reasons. Justice was only for the powerful and the elite.
Women, poor people and minorities had no rights. Women were the property of men, like anything else in the house. It was thought shameful to raise girls and some even buried them alive.
Even before Mohammed, Mecca was the center of faith for Arab peoples. The people had changed the religion of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS,God peace up on him), which was Muslim, and worshiped idols instead—even in the Kabba (the holiest place on earth).Muslims believe that all Prophets from Adam to Mohammed were sent by one God (Allah).
The Arab people used to come to Mecca for Hajj (pilgrimage) and for trade. The Quraish of Mecca was one of the most powerful tribes in Arabia. They were traders with relations as far as Syria and southwestern Arabia. They were respected because of their location and services for pilgrimage. Prophet Mohammed (Peace and blessingUpon him, PBUH) was to reverse the faith and culture of these people within his own lifetime.
The task was difficult, the opposition was powerful, and he was one person. How can you change the world around you in a positive way in a record time? Nations take centuries to develop civilizations, but the Prophet did it in one generation. This is unheard of. The Prophet stayed focused on his mission all through his life. He gave it everything he had, with the support of Allah (Glorious and Exalted,Subhana WaTa’ala, SWT).
THE PROPHET MOHAMMED
(PBUH)
In the year AD 570 Abyssinia attacked Mecca. The Abyssinians wanted to destroy the Kabba (house of worship). Abraha, the Abyssinian general, was a very powerful man. He attacked Mecca with all the forces he had. The Arab leaders didn’t have enough military power to defend the holy city. Allah (SWT) saved the city and the people by sending birds to scatter and defeat the Abyssinian army.
Mohammed (PBUH) bin Abdullah bin Abu Mutalib bin Hashem bin Adbi Manaf bin Qasy bin Killab bin Mara bin Kab bin Lua Qalib bin Fehir bin Abdi Malik bin al-Nadir bin Kanan bin Khuzaima bin Madraka bin Elyas bin Madar bin Nazar bin Ma’ad bin Adnan bin Ismail (AS) bin Ibrahim (AS)
Forty years before prophethood—Age one
The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) was born in Mecca in the house of Abd Mutalib on a Monday in 12 Rabe Awal (April 20, AD 570), the year of the Elephant in which the city was saved. His father was Abdullah bin Abdul-Mutalib, from Mecca. His mother was Amina bint Wahab, from Medina. His father died in Medina before the Prophet was born.
Baraka, an African maid who worked in the house, witnessed this great birth, and was the first person to hold him. She moved to Amina’s house to help around. She was there the day Mohammed was born, the day he got married, and the day he died. The Prophet considered her his second mother.
The Prophet was nursed by Amina, Umayma, and Thuwiba bint Asad at the beginning only. Abd Mutalib took him to the Kabba and went around it for blessings. He was very happy with his son, and he named him Mohammed.
Thirty-eight years before prophethood—Age two
Halima bint Dhuwaib, known as Halima al-sadia, was the Prophet’s regular nurse and caregiver. She was from the Bani sa’ad bin Bakir tribe. His brother by nursing was Abdullah bin al-Harith, and his sister by nursing was Unisa Hadhifa, known as Shaima. Halima’s family was very happy. Their lives changed for the better. They became wealthier and more blessed because the Prophet lived with them.
