About this ebook
Donnette D. Wheelock
Donnette Wheelock has been fascinated with poetry since she was a child. She has read poetry and written her own poetry for years. She appreciates the succinct expression of deeply-felt emotion in poetry. Her writing styles vary. At times, she carefully crafts a poem, revising and editing, to get the words just right. Other times, the words come to her unexpectedly, and the poem arrives nearly fully-formed. Whether these poems come from within her, from the universe, or from divine inspiration, she believes her poetry is the pronunciation of her heart. When she was a teacher, she incorporated poetry into all grade levels and subjects she taught. She currently owns and operates a small business with her husband and resides in Mankato, Minnesota, surrounded by far-reaching farm fields, softly-winding rivers, and the natural beauty that is often her inspiration.

Acknowledgments
Thanks to my friends and family who have made my experiences richer through your presence in my life. You are the inspiration for my writing. May you find reflections of yourselves in these words.
Creating
Joy
I don’t want to waste the joy,
she simply said.
How many times had I done just that,
ignoring the essence of a beautiful moment,
complicating it with worries and fears,
squandering all it offered.
I don’t want to waste the joy either,
I agreed,
as I mindfully made a mental note to henceforth revel in those
glorious, glittering moments
as they dance through my life,
filling my days with light, love, and gratitude.
Twirkling
(For Molly, Peggy and Shannon)
I called it twirkling, and she asked what it was.
It is laughing inside and out and knowing how to live.
It’s ice-skating after the huff-puff of shoveling,
blue eyes and pink cheeks peering from wooly scarves.
It’s letting the child in me run out on the playground every now and then before I enter the real world of self-control and stifled children.
It’s loving and caring
and realizing that without these things,
life is nothing.
It’s a talk with a child who asks, Are you an adult now?
and the reply, No, I’m just a big kid.
It’s giving all I can possibly give because I want to.
Often the smallest effort on my part opens up someone else’s
world of dreams and brings her one star closer to the heavens.
Wouldn’t it be great to say that I helped someone touch a star and
if she couldn’t hold on, I’d be right there to catch her
and hand her
