The Writer must write what he has to say, not speak it – Ernest Hemingway

The truth can rarely be told in bites of sarcasm, or even nail-biting tales of quandary, or greek gods of myth….No…for only truth can be told when a writer simply fall to his knees amongst a heavy rain, with a confession so long that he has to learn to walk all over again. That is where all great tales begin….and I knew guess that is where I must begin.

My name is Steven Thomas Dykes, born to parents Larry and Dinah Dykes, who raised me and three siblings in the capitol city of Topeka, Kansas. I was the youngest, breathing the air of a poet and storyteller at an elementary age. The freedom and justice carried with me throughout the confusion of a high school adolescence. I first became serious at age 17 when searching for oblivion. Lost in uncertainty, I found myself at a Rehabilitation Center inking my last chapter of my first novel, In The Town of Comfortability.

Jumping the fence, I left early but I brought the lessons of construction within one’s self. Moving to Dallas, Texas was my first stop of many travels which I continue to take. Exploration, realizing that a tale could never truly be told with heart unless it’s theme holds an emotional truth. Not attending college, I dug deep into my own studies – learning from the classics, divulging myself into the art of themes, finding something told only to sell by Faust, an eternal soul. Even if your future is destined to self-destruct, knowing that life holds nothing but the ticking of the clock on the wall, and the faith that the only true certainty of life is death. Or will you wallow in the misery one must bestow upon a life in utter denial, purgatory in spending your days leading a life you detest? Just to be socially acceptable.

I have grown to the age of 28 now, and as 11 years pass, I have learned through my seclusion that art is the only true history book of time. And I know that I am forever a historian.

My name is Steven Thomas Dykes.

    Prelude:

Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned.

    - Congreve

Chapter One: Love at First Sight

As I sit on an empty train that was headed to El Paso, Texas, I think about how fast my life has been leading to this escape. To Mexico I ran… yet kindly, for I knew I could never outrun my conscious.

Can I get you a blanket? the attendant asked as I quietly answered no. She was the friend of my life, and she wanted nothing more than to have a shoulder to cry on. Yet – I had to leave her, along with my life….flying in the dust.

I can still remember the first time we met….

We were both at the tender age of 14 (freshmen in high school), at our first high school party at 89th and Green Road. Two kids from Kansas - underneath the moonlight….that was a wonderful night – meeting Jersey Leah Adams.

To 89th and Green we go…..we were both waiting on the keg, as she grabbed the tap just as it ran out of oxygen.

Need me to pump it? I asked nervously, for she was the most gorgeous girl in my class.

Yeah….I think so, she replied, as I pushed the tap down with ferocity, trying to impress her.

Thank you so much – my name is Jersey, as she first introduced herself, holding out her hand to me.

    I’m Scott.

Well, Scott…… I’m going to take a lap…..maybe I will see you later, she told me while walking away with a graceful stride. It was something I had never seen before in a woman, watching her walk away – it was as if she was floating on air. I
