    The Excel Interface

By the time you already have Microsoft Excel 2016 installed into your computer, the first step is to get to know and become familiar with the Excel Interface. If you have encountered using Excel 2010 or Excel 2013 in the past, then transitioning to Excel 2016 should not be a big problem.

Similar to other MS Office applications, Excel is a comprehensive program that consists of extensive features and functions. But unlike other applications, Excel involves dealing with much intricate data such as formulas, functions, and other computations. As such, its structure and interface may seem a bit overwhelming at first.

As such, if you totally do not have any experience of using Excel, you have to first familiarize yourself with its interface, and navigate it extensively to know the specific descriptions and functions of its parts.

Upon opening Excel 2016, the Start or Welcome Screen will be displayed. Here, you are given the options to create an entirely new workbook, create a workbook based on a preset template, or access a workbook that you have recently worked on.

To start off our hands-on exercise:

Select the Blank workbook option to open and create a new Excel file.

In the future, you may also choose from any of the available templates, depending on the output you wish to generate. Some of Excel’s common templates include calendars, meal planners, to-do lists, process maps, and expense logs.

After selecting Blank workbook, a new workbook will open, with a default Book1 filename. You can now start navigating the Excel Interface and start familiarizing yourself with its several parts.

Here are the parts of the Excel Interface:

    2. Title Bar – horizontal bar located at the top of a window. As its name denotes, this displays the filename and the application name of an open or active file.

    3. Quick Access Toolbar – enables you to access frequently used commands that are independent of the ribbon tab currently selected. You can customize the toolbar with commands that you usually use, and change or move its location based on your work area preference.

    4. Ribbon – set of toolbars that includes all the necessary commands in performing typical tasks in Excel. The Ribbon comprises of several tabs. Each tab is further divided into groups that contain specific commands.
