Business plans that represent an attempt at clarifying (for themselves and others) the reasons that the business should exist or expand and why a lender should fund the enterprise.

Extensive financial documentation required to solicit funding from small business lenders. You will find examples of Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, Income Projections, and other financial information included with the textual portions of the business plans.

A directory section that includes listings for venture capital and finance companies, which specialize in funding start-up and second-stage small business ventures, and a comprehensive listing of Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) offices. In addition, the Appendix also contains updated listings of all Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs); associations of interest to entrepreneurs; Small Business Administration (SBA) Regional Offices; and consultants specializing in small business planning and advice. It is strongly advised that you consult supporting organizations while planning your business, as they can provide a wealth of useful information.

A Small Business Term Glossary to help you decipher the sometimes confusing terminology used by lenders and others in the financial and small business communities.

A Business Plan Template which serves as a model to help you construct your own business plan. This generic outline lists all the essential elements of a complete business plan and their components, including the Summary, Business History and Industry Outlook, Market Examination, Competition, Marketing, Administration and Management, Financial Information, and other key sections. Use this guide as a starting point for compiling your plan.

    Introduction

Perhaps the most important aspect of business planning is simply doing it. More and more business owners are beginning to compile business plans even if they don't need a bank loan. Others discover the value of planning when they must provide a business plan for the bank. The sheer act of putting thoughts on paper seems to clarify priorities and provide focus. Sometimes business owners completely change strategies when compiling their plan, deciding on a different product mix or advertising scheme after finding that their assumptions were incorrect. This kind of healthy thinking and re-thinking via business planning is becoming the norm. The editors of Business Plans Handbook (BPH) sincerely hope that this publication is a helpful tool in the successful completion of your business plan, no matter what the reason for creating it.

    New Business Opportunities

This publication offers business plans created by real people. BPH provides actual business plans written by entrepreneurs engaged in creative endeavors within the same industry. The business and personal names and addresses and general locations have been changed to protect the privacy of the plan authors.

Comprehensive financial documentation has become increasingly important as today's entrepreneurs compete for the finite resources of business lenders. Our plans illustrate the financial data generally required of loan applicants, including Income Statements, Financial Projections, Cash Flows, and Balance Sheets.

    Enhanced Appendixes

In an effort to provide the most relevant and valuable information for our readers, we have updated the coverage of small business resources. For instance, you will find a directory section, which includes listings of all of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) offices; Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs); Small Business Administration Regional Offices; venture capital and finance companies, which specialize in funding start-up and second-stage small business enterprises; associations of interest to entrepreneurs; and consultants, specializing in small business advice and planning. In addition, you will find a comprehensive glossary of business terms to help the small business planner navigate the sometimes confusing language of entrepreneurship. For your reference, we have also reprinted a business plan template used by small business counselors, which provides a comprehensive overview of the essential components of a business plan.

    Pet Care People

    31 First St.

    Lampasas, Texas 76550

    Gerald Rekve

Pet Care People is a company that will provide pets with companionship and exercise within their home environment.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Thema Ritter is a lover of pets. She has extensive experience in both the retail and therapeutic aspects of pet care, having worked in pet stores and veterinarian's offices as a veterinarian technician. For many years she thought about the possibility of starting her own business that catered to pets. One day, after reading an article on pet services, Thema saw her opportunity to run a business that accommodates pets and that will provide enough income for her to support herself.

Based in Lampasas, Texas, Thema will operate Pet Care People. This will not be a traditional pet hotel; instead, all the care for the clients' animals will take place at the clients' homes. The main reason for this is to ease the stress that is caused to the family pet when they are taken to unknown and unfamiliar surroundings. With our service, the pet will be in its natural surroundings and be able to remain stress-free. Lack of companionship and exercise for long periods of time can also cause stress to family pets; personal care and attention from a loving companion during their owner's absence can also ease their anxiety and helps ensure a happy, healthy pet.

    Mission

Our mission is to provide all of our pets with companionship and exercise in a stress-free environment, while at the same time earning a decent living for ourselves.

    MARKET ANALYSIS

Our market will be Lampasas, Texas and the surrounding community. While this is a small city, it does have a large pet population that we are confident will sustain the products and services we offer.

    Customers

    Customer Demographics

Our clients are mainly between ages 24 and 55 and work on a full-time basis.

Clients also include people who are going on holidays for the weekend or for more extended vacations.

The income levels of our clients range from $40,000 to $300,000 per year. We do get clients outside of these income levels, but they are relatively few in numbers.

    Growth Analysis

At this moment we have seen a rise in people who have pets and who no longer want to take them to pet hotels because the of the stress the pets get from being removed from their homes and being left in these unfamiliar places. Increased risk of disease transmission at traditional pet hotels is another factor that discourages people from using their services. Even though all pets need to get the shots before attending to these pet hotels, there are always a small percentage of pets that get very ill and end up costing the owner a lot of money in subsequent veterinarian bills. In some cases, the illness can be fatal.

The unique services we provide address the need for family pets to get the exercise and companionship they need while also doing so in a safe, familiar and stress-free way. We are the only provider that offers these services, and thus our opportunity for success and continued growth is great.

Although there are no signs of any competitors at this time, we want to start operating as soon as possible to ensure we gain the advantage of being the only service of our kind available.

    SERVICES

We are not a pet hotel. We are a pet walking and pet care service company, providing service to the market of Lampasas, Texas and the surrounding community. Pet Watchers is a pet sitting business. Instead of pet owners bringing their animals to a kennel or boarding facility while they are away, we provide a variety of in-home services that allow their pets to stay in a safe, familiar environment.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    Business Overview

Just as there are many benefits associated with pet ownership, there also are many responsibilities. Irregular work schedules, business trips, and vacations can present challenges for pet owners who must balance such demands with the needs of their pets.

Pet Watchers is a pet sitting business. Instead of pet owners bringing their animals to a kennel or boarding facility while they are away, we provide a variety of in-home services that allow their pets to stay in a safe, familiar environment. Our services include everything from periodic daily visits to overnight stays. In addition to feeding and walking pets, we administer medications and take pets to grooming or veterinarian appointments. We also offer concurrent home sitting services for our clients, such as bringing in mail, turning on and off lights, and watering plants.

Pet Watchers is a new business established by Brian and Anita Phillips. After retiring from a 20-year law-enforcement career that included service as a K-9 officer, Brian began searching for a new opportunity that would allow him to continue interacting with the public. A part-time veterinary technician, Anita had been thinking about establishing her own business for several years. After many conversations and a great deal of research, the Phillips decided that pet sitting would not only satisfy their interests and needs, it also would leverage their existing skills.
