What is a verb?
A word that expresses
action
condition
state of being
Verbs are commonly known as action words
FINITE VERBS (a.k.a. MAIN VERBS
)
Make a statement
Express a state of being
Can remain by themselves in a sentence
Ex: The accident ruined my car. The apple pie tasted delicious. The baseball player caught the pop-fly ball. Who ate the last cookie? Stop! NONFINITE VERBS (a.k.a. VERBALS
)
Are not complete and so cannot be used by themselves in a sentence
Instead, they need to be used with auxiliary (helping
) verbs
Nonfinite verb forms include:
