    Prologue

Taylor Roosma is an attractive brunette with athletic figure and beautiful brown eyes, making her almost look like a young man at a distance. Her uncle is John Roosma of the Gunfight at Dutchman’s Well fame. As a daughter of John’s brother, she and her father had followed John to the United States two years later in 1879. Her father, Jochum, started a ranch in northern Montana near the Canadian border. When the transcanadian railroad was completed across southern Canada, Jochum purchased more ranch land on the Canadian side of the border for access to the railroad in Lethbridge. At that time, Taylor and her friend Hannah took the lead in moving her father’s Texas Longhorns and Herfords across the Canadian line to a new line cabin established near the railroad. Because Taylor was in charge of the line cabin near the Canadian railroad and lived away from the ranch headquarters back in Montana, she began being called the Canadian Cowgirl by her father’s cowboys. Soon Hannah called her the same thing. As she and Hannah rode up and down the railroad line, keeping their stock away from the railroad, their boot prints were left in the soil when they dismounted. Hannah often stayed seated on her mount while Taylor examined hoof prints.

One spring day in 1879, Taylor did some excessive walking enjoying the bright sunshine. She started a bonfire as a reference point as she remounted and continued to look for missing cattle. Unfortunately, a Canadian mounted policeman had been dispatched to look for some cattle rustlers in the area. When he saw the smoke rising from Taylor’s fire, he assumed it was a branding fire and rustlers were heating a branding iron to change brands on stolen cattle. He spurred his horse into a gallop and came in a rush. Fortunately for Hannah, she had already started back to the line camp, pushing three head of cattle. Sadly for Taylor, she was still standing by the fire when the red-coated Mountie arrived. This is the story of Taylor’s unfortunate arrest and imprisonment.

Hannah notifies Taylor’s uncle, John Roosma by telegraph at his ranch in the Santa Fe, New Mexico area. Uncle John comes on the run by steam train. But, by the time he arrives in Canada, Taylor has been shipped to the British prison colony in Australia. This book Canadian Cowgirl is the story of her wrongful imprisonment in the Australian prison.

*Historic Note: When the United States had won its independence from Great Britain 103 years earlier, Australia became the new prison colony for Great Britain.
