Summary Guide - The Mindset Warrior

    Introduction

In this Mindset Warrior Summary Guide, we cover the main topics discussed in Why We Sleep. This book is intended to supplement your reading, and be an easy reference guide. You are encouraged to purchase the original book if you have not already.

The difference between this guide and the actual book is that we don't go into the lengthy stories and repetition that most books often do. Instead, we share each principle, explain its reasoning, and then provide advice on how you can apply each to your own sleep habits in order to architect a high performance lifestyle,  free of preventable physical and mental ailments.

As I always say, the original books are great to read because they provide a lot of examples. This repetition can help to embed the lessons into your psyche. That being said, stripping these lessons down to there core will help you to focus on the things that really matter. As I'm sure we can agree, time is also very valuable. I am all about maximizing time.

    Setting The Stage

Matthew Walker is the author of Why We Sleep; he has a PhD in neurophysiology from the University of Nottingham, and has been studying sleep for 20+ years. His interest in sleep came after observing the brain activity in older adults who were in the early stages of dementia. Based on certain observations, he began to question whether sleep disruption was causing the progression of the disease. Seeing that the science community didn't know the exact reasons why sleep was necessary, he developed an intrigue in sleep that has spanned 20+ years.

He was a professor of psychiatry at Harvard, and now works as a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California Berkeley.

Why We Sleep is broken into 4 parts:

Part 1 discusses the nature of sleep and its evolution across the life span.

Part 2 discusses the pros and cons of sleep and sleep loss.

Part 3 discusses the role of dreaming.

Part 4 discusses sleep disorders & various solutions to cure disruptive sleep.

    NOTE FROM THE MINDSET WARRIOR:

Of all the summaries I have written, this is the one I am most enthusiastic about sharing with the public.

Sleep is something I see many people take for granted; as Matthew frequently highlights, most of us are delusional about our sleep quality. While I thought I
