    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The completion of my first book clearly created a turbulent and profound passion as well as a voracious appetite, for something I sincerely thought I was doing just for the pleasure of doing: Writing.

I realized with surprise that, it was not just for the enjoyment, since I found myself eagerly looking forward for the time spent with myself. I was indeed very passionate about the time spent in an intimate communion with myself, without any outside distraction or interference. I was thrilled about being intimately in touch with my soul with the opportunity to engage in a never- ending dialogue allowing me to explore the most profound feelings buried there.

This dialogue, which is in reality a monologue, usually triggers an urgent need to register thoroughly every single detail about it, as if I were a decent, objective reporter. To my gradually progressive and unexpected surprise, I found myself frequently obsessed about searching for these moments with myself, when I could freely and peacefully register my deepest thoughts and feelings and the infinite gratification I obtained from that. This gratification is in reality like an unbelievable feeling, similar to the one resulting from a formal psychotherapeutic intervention helping one to deal with the stress of daily living and surviving.

For a lightening like moment, a fraction of time, a brief instant, my soul is being taken over by an urge to write and be involved in this ongoing intimate dialogue with myself, ignoring everything else around me.

A time, a moment, a brief instant, when I feel endowed with qualities that are foreign to me in any other circumstances.

When I reflect back on all of this, I honestly think that my brother in law, Dr. Jean Joseph Lochard, MD, who pushed me into this arena, should get the full credit. When I analyzed the all process, he probably was not the only culprit, since right behind him, I have to mention a long list of individuals who probably share some of the credit, including: my wife Joseline, My children: Alina, Claudine, Henry Jr, Henrika and Joyce, my sisters particularly Dr. Scarlette Barbot Jean-Baptiste, MD, Mona Decoster, Carolle St Urbain, Some of my Colleagues including Dr. Allen Gore, MD, and my parents, particularly my father the late Dr. Medrick P Barbot, MD and my mother Anne Marie Blot.

This entire crew continues to bring what has perhaps been and probably will continue to be the best of me.

    Henry Claude Barbot, MD.

    FOREWORD

In a world of diagnosis, patient care and medication management, psychiatrists rarely have the opportunity to take off our doctor label and just talk about what we observe, think and feel on a daily basis. In his book Reflections and Opinions of a Mental Health Professional 2, Dr. Henry Barbot successfully combines his professional observations with his personal perspective, giving the reader a rare inside glimpse into the heart and mind of a psychiatric doctor. His comprehensive explanations of psychiatric theories and treatments are written to be understood by lay people and doctors alike. Readers who are looking for guidance with their personal or professional goals, will find the chapter Mind over Matter especially useful and brimming with strategies for your individual success.

In several chapters, Dr. Barbot offers social commentary about drug abuse among the mentally ill. He writes about the high usage of K2 and Spice among the youngest of patients, explaining the symptoms of abuse and the effect of these drugs on mental stability. While in the chapter Forensic Concepts, Barbot delves into the highly relevant issue of mass killings in relation to the mentally ill. Barbot presents the argument that some patients are best served in a long term hospital environment, due to their unwillingness to comply with outpatient treatment methods.

Most impressive about Dr. Barbot's book is his willingness to communicate his emotional connection to his native country of Haiti. The description of his childhood is vivid and places the reader inside of his mind, as a child watching his friends leave the home he loved so much. Barbot's declaration of love for his country is genuine and provides a peek at him as a person, as well as a doctor.

    PREFACE

It is again a great pleasure for me to introduce to the readers, the second book of Dr. Henry Claude Barbot, as a continuity of the journey to the Mental Health Field. If you have enjoyed exploring the first book, I am sure this one will certainly take you far beyond your curiosity and satisfy your expectations.

Going quickly over the chapter’s titles, you’ll notice that, Dr. Barbot had basically kept the same subjects previously developed in his first book. However he put more emphases on the MOOD DISORDERS and MOOD DISORDERS RELATED CONCEPTS, an area very delicate and so much actual.

It is not by chance, that Dr. Barbot decided to write his second book that way.

As time goes by, he felt that he could bring us, even more information about those subjects already treated.

No surprise here, as we know that PSYCHIATRY is a very dynamic field, with constant changes, not only involving the concepts of the problems and their approach but also and specially the many aspects of their treatment.

By now, after reading carefully the first book, we probably appreciate more, the impact and the importance of Psychiatrists in our society.

With this second book it becomes clearer that we should consult them and use their services, as often as needed despite some negative, unjustified, erroneous perception of their role.

In conclusion, I am commending one more time, Dr. Henry Claude Barbot for his work, done with passion and a great knowledge of his specialty.

I am inviting you readers, to enjoy this book, as much as you did the first time. Why not even more?

AN ANALYTIC LOOK AND OPINION FROM HOME (TRANSLATION FROM FRENCH)

I believe that after the success of the first volume, Reflections and Opinions of a Mental Health Professional, the second one must be another Best Seller

The themes displayed, due in part to the experiences acquired in the management of your patients, as well as the conclusions drawn from their psychiatric history along with the comments and the discussions made based on your expertise in the field, come across with a powerful realism.

All of this could only be beneficial for those who will have the privilege of reading a second book from you.

From birth going through the different stages of the life of an individual, mostly the cultural impact affecting him, was not neglected.

I have been content to see that you did voice some thoughts about your countrymen living in Haiti.

Indeed after the earthquake on January 12, 2010, the specialists of Mental Health in Haiti have been facing all kinds of Phobias.

I believe that your second book will be useful to a great deal of people.

I also wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the privilege of you sending me a PDF of your book and asking me about my first impressions.

That reminds me of your vacation in the city of Cap Haitian at Daddy’s residence, when you used to let me read your adolescent poems while I was still a little girl.

As I go through the PDF, I firmly believe that your readers will find an answer to the numerous questions haunting the conscious as well as the subconscious part of their mind.

These 18 chapters are the fruit of your labor designed with the goal of touching the most intimate part of our

    Ego.

Even the mystical aspect of our culture, with its potential to affect the development of our personality was not neglected.

    Keep going Big Bro!

    Keep moving on your path!

Our father Medrick Barbot, your spouse Joseline, your children, and all your sisters and brothers are proud of you.

    Kudos Dr. Henry Claude Barbot!

    Receive your sister’s affection!
