    Travis gets to eat whatever he wants, and he only likes junk food. Because his mother is always busy, Travis often eats colorful foods from packages and take-out from his favorite restaurants. He never eats freshly cooked mealsnot until he has to spend the summer with his grandparents, that is.

    Grandma and Grandpa live on a ranch far from any restaurants, and Grandma loves spending hours in the kitchen making nutritious, wholesome meals. On his first night, Grandma prepares a big, healthy meal from scratch. Yuck! This isnt anything like what Travis is used to eating, but theres nothing else to eat. Determined not to give in and eat his grandparents food, Travis decides to go to bed without eating.

    Lulled to sleep by the rumbling of an empty tummy, Travis has an amazing dream. Transported through time, Travis dreams of Benjamin, a young Judean shepherd boy who shares his simple food with a very large group of people; Abigail, a young girl who lives during the time of the American Revolutionary War; Rylee, a hungry little girl who has to eat green beans day after day in a house full of sand; and many others. Whats more, with each of children in his dreams, he sees a little wooden bowl.

    With the help of the little wooden bowl and stories of these children from the past, Travis may yet learn to be thankful for good, healthy food.

      Chapter 1

      Once upon a time there was a boy named Travis who did not like food. Oh, he liked some food, but only food that came out of certain packages or boxes or restaurants. His mother was busy most of the time working at her job, and it was more convenient for her to let him eat what he wanted. That way she did not have to worry about working in the kitchen to cook up a meal.

      Then one day Travis’ mother told him that she had to go away to a faraway place for a business meeting that would last all summer. Travis was going to have to stay with his grandparents. Now this was rather unsettling for Travis because he had been told that his grandpa and grandma lived on a ranch many miles down a dirt road out in the desert country of Arizona. There would be no malls or restaurants nearby where he could get the food he liked. He had also been told that his grandma spent many hours in the kitchen cooking, and Travis just knew that he would not like eating meals at her house. He loved his grandmother, but he did not like food that was different from what he was used to.

      He complained to his mother that he did not want to go stay at his grandparent’s house, but his mother told him that he had no choice. His father would be gone from home every day working long hours at his construction business, and no one would be at home. This was one time that Travis was not going to get to do as he wanted.

      Travis’ mother helped him pack his suitcase and then his parents drove him in the car to the city
