A Caregiver's Calling: Ministry Experiences of Those Called to Serve the Vulnerable
()
About this ebook
Jesus said, I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another (John 13:34).
One line in the Prayer of St. Francis reads, For it is in giving that we receive. It is my belief and the intent of this book to emphasize these two points. As caregivers, we are to love as Jesus loves. This love is selfless and unconditional. When we love like this, the line from St. Franciss prayer is fulfilled for us. It is in giving that we receive. As we grow in Jesus love, we find that we not only receive but receive far more than we give. I wrote this book to assist anyone involved in any type of ministry to realize in their lives this reciprocal nature of service to one another, and have enlisted the help of others with varied backgrounds in ministry to offer their assistance as well.

For my mother and father, whose unconditional love presented God’s love to me at a very young age and taught me the importance of service to others as a way of life.
For my fifteen siblings, who taught me to give and take, and to trust and depend on others.
For my husband, our four children, their spouses, and our grandchildren: my family, my love, my life.
For my co-workers who have supported me and witnessed to me by their lives how to love and serve. I couldn’t ask for better examples.
Acknowledgments
I am deeply grateful to my husband of many years for his love, patience, and expertise, on which I have relied heavily to complete this book. I thank him also for sharing ministry with me and teaching me skills that helped form me into the minister that I am. I also thank Father Paul Fruth for his love, support, and encouragement. I am thankful for all who have contributed to my book and who share their faith and ministries with me.
Introduction
I have worked in a hospital as a chaplain for thirteen years. Ministry, loving and caring for others, began when I was a child. I felt compelled to reach out to and care for the ones that no one else seemed to. My father set a good example for me as he cared for and loved others as Jesus did. Writing this book is a way for me to share my passion, caring for others, with those who find themselves in the position of caring for a loved one or a friend or working in a caring profession. Caregiving is a part of everyone’s life at one time or another. My book also shares ways to draw closer to God as one ministers.
The call to ministry is different for each of us. It seems that my call has always been a part of who I am. I attended Catholic school as a child. After I graduated from high school, I married the love of my life, and we raised our four daughters in a small town. I feel that being a wife and mother has been a part of my training for ministry. I tried my best to treat my husband and children with respect and unconditional love. I reached out to my church family, especially the elderly and the sick. Sharing the selfless love of Christ with others has been a great source of fulfillment and joy for me.
My formal training to become a chaplain began when I decided to go to college after my children were grown, at the age of forty. I was frightened to return to school after all the years away but was convinced that this was God’s plan for me. At this time I had no idea what I would do with a degree in pastoral ministry. Soon I
