Introduction.
My name is Magnum and I’m a dog. More specifically, I’m a Dudley Yellow Labrador Retriever. A Dudley Yellow Lab, for those of you who don’t know... and I’m assuming most of you don’t...carries a genetic flaw. I don’t have any black pigmentation in my DNA (you know, the stuff that makes me me and you you). Instead of a black lining around the edges of my mouth and eyes, as well as the normal black nose, mine are pink. Makes me look weird, I know and the AKC considers it undesirable. Even though I’m as healthy as any other Lab, I guess that’s one reason I wound up being kicked from pillar to post, eventually ending up in a pound waiting for a needle to send me to that big dog house in the sky. Couldn’t even count on spending time at Rainbow Bridge because no one wanted me here on earth. However, all of that changed in 2008 when I met Richard. More accurately, he met me because I was sittin’ in a cage in a pound in White Settlement...that’s a small town on the west side of Fort Worth, Texas...and wasn’t going anywhere except to an execution chamber.
I knew someone was looking for a dog because a female Rotweiler had been taken out to the front to show someone. Didn’t know who was out there, but since the Rotty was a gentle and kinda sedate girl, I figured she’d be taken and I’d be back to waiting for the needle.
Surprisingly, she was brought back and shoved in her run. Hmmm?
I thought. Probably too big. Of course I wasn’t all that small myself, weighing in at around 68 pounds. Oh, well, there were several small dogs that the person could choose from. Then I got the surprise of my short life. A lead was put on me and I was taken toward the front. Me! I figured I didn’t have a chance.
When I came thru the door, I saw a man standing there. He was somewhere around 6’1", somewhat on the slender side and he seemed friendly. Gee! I liked him!! Maybe I did have a chance!
He hunkered down and started pettin’ and talkin’ to me. I couldn’t help it...I just went nuts...wiggling...rolling on my back...throwing my paws...pushing up against him. I just flat made a fool of myself. I’ve always been strong and I was even pushing him back off his feet.
For some reason the man seemed to like me. At least he didn’t tell the guy who ran the pound to take me back. About that time the pound man handed the lead to Richard (I’d heard him mention his name to the pound man) and suggested he walk me around outside to see what he thought of me.
Well, I don’t know who walked who. I was so happy to be outside and have a chance to be with someone who maybe wanted me that I just went berserk! I think I drug him all over about a quarter acre lot. I couldn’t help myself and the whole time I was doing it, I kept thinking this
