Let Go Of The Roof And Fly! - Donahue B. Silvis
Chapter one
The discovery that changed my life for ever.
This was not something that came to me like a flash of lightning, rather, it slowly dawned on me over a period of time. Having placed my trust in people whom I allowed to influence me, much of which came from attending seminars, even more from books that I read and re-read, and later, from working with and learning from, many of my own highly successful clients.
All this caused essential changes in my belief system that helped me to achieve all the goals that I set for myself. This literally mind-blowing discovery allowed me to be financially independent and retire; the urge to share the gathered knowledge, as the ‘greats’ shared it with me, brought me out of retirement, not only to write this book, but also to help create an ebook publishing website in order to share it.
What I am revealing in this written work changed my entire world for the better, financially, socially, and status-wise, before I even understood 1% of its real potential. It made things happen for me and many others too, that like me, discovered the secrets staring them in the face. I know a little more now about this extraordinary power that we can flick on as simply as turning on a light, if we just know where to find the switch and so bear with me while I give a little supporting evidence before I really explain it, and how you can easily use it for yourself.
First, some facts. Having started writing this book some three years ago, it is now 2008, the year of the Beijing Olympics. Up-to-the-minute reports from eminent neuroscientists have recently disclosed two mind-boggling facts: they estimate that 98% of what we know about the brain, has been learned in the last ten years. Moreover, at least 80% of what we formerly thought we knew about how the brain functions, was wrong!
Looking back in history, there are countless examples of work by those whom I like to refer to as ‘the greats’. Shakespeare, for instance. You only have to read or see his ‘Julius Caesar’ to know that he understood more about how our thinking process works than most people do even today. Mark Anthony’s speech, that saved his life when the cunning Brutus had set him up in front of an angry crowd waiting to lynch him, reveals the bard’s depth of knowledge about human emotions and how to influence them in order to benefit yourself and others.
Alexander the Great, another of my heroes, was tutored by Aristotle. The Aristotle. The psychological knowledge that Alexander absorbed, allowed him to overcome the most formidable odds against him, of around 20 to 1! All that too, around 300 years B.C!
René Descartes, 1596 – 1650, came up with an explosively loaded statement: ‘I think, Therefore I am’. I had to puzzle about that one for years before the import really hit me. However, the part of that phrase that even he could not fully understand himself, is the ‘think’ part. How do we think? Where do our thoughts come from and how do we influence them?
Many eminent scientists, including Einstein and Newton, have over the years, scratched at the surface of understanding the laws of our mental processes. In what form energy exists and the complex connections between the physical and the mental in how the brain works. Einstein stated that Imagination is more important than knowledge.
At this point, I would like to explain a little more about my own motives for producing this written work. Monetary success alone will not necessarily bring happiness. Giving time and using your own innate skills to help others who sincerely wish to improve their lot. Helping people and causes less fortunate, avoiding hurt, sharing your good fortune, showing empathy and understanding, spreading goodwill and happiness wherever you can – these are the essential components of rounded success in all things. Much help was given to me, and this is my way of thanking those who gave it, including those whom I never met, but listened to and read, and to whom I am forever grateful. Indeed, it was those sentiments that pulled me out of retirement to write this.
Looking back to my twenties, I had not got a clue where to put my energies. I wanted, indeed needed, to understand how the great achievers had gone about doing so. I certainly wanted to improve my own lot, and not having started with much going for me, I was eagerly seeking a way to find out. I started by subscribing to The Psychology Publishing Company, in Marple, Cheshire. I signed up to receive a book every month. One of the first was ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill. The book was written in 1937; that was the year I was born! It is still on my bookshelf today. Furthermore, on a recent trip to the States, I was both impressed and delighted to see it on plentiful display at such large book retailers as Borders, and Barnes and Noble.
Well, that book was my ‘kick-starter’ to self improvement. I was knocked out by Napoleon Hill’s logic. He had studied and analysed the attitudes and approaches that the greats had in common, and compiled a step-by-step route to riches. He described ‘riches’ as being different things to different people, mostly monetary goals, but certainly not exclusively. I was convinced by it and I put my trust and belief in Napoleon Hill’s words. I could hardly wait to start trying out the methods that he described.
My first job after completing my compulsory two year’s National Service in the Royal Air Force, was as a salesman
