Sex Ed Uncensored - Sexual Identity - Taylor Puck
Sexual
Identity
This circle of sexuality revolves around how we perceive ourselves as a sexual being. Its major components consist of: Biological sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender role.
BOYS HAVE A PENIS,
GIRLS HAVE A VULVA
I s it a boy or girl?
This is the first question popped when the message has been relayed that we even exist. People want to know: Will they be buying you blue or pink gifts? Funny how the first question is never: Is the baby healthy?
— shows where our cultural priorities lie . The parents’ first reactions usually revolve around the healthiness of the child; for some, the sex of the baby is irrelevant. But for those parents who keep the sex of their babies a surprise, it truly is a surprise if the doctor looks up from behind the sheets after hearing the notorious inquiry, Is it a boy or a girl?
and answers back, Flip a coin…
From the little sex education that you did receive from your schooling, you should know that the biological sex of a person describes their genetic make-up, hormones, and sexual and reproductive anatomy. Put simply: The biological sex describes whether someone is a boy or girl. What determines the sex? Well chromosomally, your father does; gonadally, whether or not you have ovaries or testicles; and hormonally, your levels of estrogen and androgen. As astonishing as it may seem, sometimes these three biological factors aren’t always so clear-cut!
The sex of a child can usually be determined around 18-20 weeks in utero. Why so late?
you may ask. The early stages of development are determined by the mother’s genotype. This is because it takes about three weeks for the embryo’s DNA to kick in and start molding the actual embryo. At eight weeks, the embryo is large enough to be labeled a fetus; and the organs begin to develop. Indifferent gonads
begin to take shape but do not grow into ovaries or testes until they receive further instructions. If the baby has a Y chromosome, it carries the SRY gene; this gene promotes the protein, H-Y antigen. And it is this protein which activates the process of turning the fetus into a male.
Both male and female babies have two systems when they are born: the Wolffian system and the Mullerian system. IF the baby has a Y chromosome, the attached SRY gene allows for the secretion of the H-Y antigen. Then, the H-Y antigen will bring about change in the gonads by turning them into testes. In reaction to the production of the testes, testosterone materializes and the Wolffian system develops into the vas deferens and the seminal vesicles. As a result, the Mullerian system, which is not in use, will disintegrate.
