My journey began with buying NZ Hot Rod magazines in the ‘70s using money earned on a paper run. The magazines sparked a lifelong interest in cars generally, and more specifically in hot rods. Practicalities in life meant any thoughts of owning my own hot rod were put on the back burner.

As time went on, I was getting to the stage in life where “I need to do it now before it’s too late”. An online search over several years eventually turned up one real contender, a heavily chopped blown Candy apple red coupe beautifully built by Mal Hurrell (NZHRM Sept 2008). It screamed hot rod and really piqued my interest.

Several phone calls to Mal gathered the car’s history and background and provided enough information
